Amex points posting after payment

I have a bunch of amex points due to me this cycle. I probably won't PIF for a couple of weeks. I know if you make at least the minimum payment you get the points owed added to your account. My question is this. I randomly paid a couple of hundred prior to the statement closing (I had PIF the prior statement so the balance owed was zero), will my points post upon statement cut or will I need to make another payment to trigger the points posting?

Re: Amex points posting after payment

Good question. If the charges have already been paid, one would think they would post when the statement closes. This is one of those cases where “ask Amex” probably doesn’t apply. Points posting with payment is still relatively new and PIF prior to statement closing is not really the norm.

My Marriott and SM post when the statement cuts.

My MR earning cards have a bit of a lag.

I really don’t pay that much attention when my MR’s post unless it’s a spend bonus type deal.

Historically, MRs always posted a day after the following statement closed. But I did notice the “Available on payment” on the points summary page a few months ago.

Re: Amex points posting after payment

I would think that as long as the minimum payment has been satisfied for said billing cycle, you should get those pending points upon closing.

It will simply show no minimum due for the next cycle when it does close, right? In theory you shouldn't need to PIF for points to post, as long as the min payment is met each statement period.

However, I haven't paid just prior to cloing in a while. So I don't truly recall if it does count towards the next billing cycle's minimum.

You may still have to satisfy the new minimum after closing.

I havn't really been paying attention to this new rule, I just blindly trust that Amex will give me the points I earned.

Re: Amex points posting after payment

Just a follow-up. I paid a portion of the balance before statement cut and when the statement cut I did not receive any of the points. So it appears only payments made after statement cut will trigger points posting at least if you are not PIF.

Re: Amex points posting after payment

Payments only count towards the minimum payment once the statement closes. If you pay early , you reduce your balance but you still have a minimum payment due once the statement generates.

Points are only available upon payment once the statement closes. So you need to wait for a statement to close and then pay.
