No wonder; I'm still on Android 7.1.2 Nougat
That's certainly the most logical explanation and the downside of non-Google phones. Are you on Project Fi or another carrier?
I was on project Fi. I'm on AT&T now.

My phone is showing it updated the Amex Mobile app within the last 24 hours to version 5.26.0 which looks nothing like the screenshot posted. So what's the version number of this new version? Of course the Play Store is saying the current version "varies with device" so no version number is listed there.
I even took Roy21's advice to uninstall and reinstall and I still have version 5.26.0.
Roy21, if you have the most recent version of the G series it would be the G6 which is the slightly older sibling of the V30. The G versions are released in the Spring and the V versions in the Fall; they are mostly the same design except the V series tends to have more multimedia features.
For me, the Play Store says that the last update for the Amex mobile app was Nov 8th and that was version 5.26.0. But when I open my Amex app to check the version it tells me it's 6.1.2 (60600). Something doesn't seem to add up for me lol I'm on Android 8.0.0.
This app is identical to iPhone's new version (as has been said many times), but I still think there's a huge learning curve. The functionality isn't different at all, you're right but a lot of things that had become muscle memory to me pretty much are now harder to do. The first thing that comes to mind is seeing past statements.
The reason some are seeing the update and others are not, is likely what Play Store calls a rolling release. They'll initially roll out to 50% of users, then after a certain amount of time they'll increase that percentage ultimatly getting to 100%, over a set amount of time. Worked through this just last week with a client determining best roll out plan for my client's new back-end testing for user ramp up and utilization. This helps in mitigating major bugs and/or system issues so that ALL of your users/customers arent impacted all at once. Its a common practice in mass software deployment.
I have this update on my iOS but have not checked my Android devices.
Just a note... I got the update today!
I know it's the same functionality just with a fresh coat of paint, but IMO it's easier to use. Specifically, it's easier for me to get where I want to go.
(I'm using a Galaxy S8, Android 7.0)
I was just about to comment about the app update but UncleB beat me to it.
The Play Store pushed version 6.1.3 today so if you're still on version 5.26 check for updates.
