Hey guys! So I've stated many, many times how I've had my Wells Fargo secured card for almost 2 years and still no graduation in sight. So yesterday, I decided it was a good time to close this card, especially after my AMAZING PenFed approvals.
So yesterday on my way to pick up my son, I decided to give Wells Fargo a call and ask about closing the account. I am carrying a balance of about $300/$1,200 on the card and wanted to see if they could use the deposit to pay off the balance. She said no, I would need to pay off the entire balance to $0 and then they could close the account.
Fast forward to last night: my boyfriend and I were talking and he said just use some of the money he had saved to pay off the remaining balance to close the card and then just give him the money back once they gave me my deposit back. I said ok sure, but let's find out how long it takes to get that money back. So I called them again, spoke to a really nice guy this time (the lady before was kind of a female dog) and he said sure! We can go ahead and start the closing process and once you pay the balance off, give us a call back to finalize it. I told him to go right ahead and he said, oh... ok well, are you sure? It says here the card is set to graduate on November 30th.
Like seriously?? I mean, this was the outcome I was secretly hoping for, but knew would never happen. Wells Fargo can give a rats patootie if you close your accounts. I've been a Wells Fargo customer since I was 18, not that it matters, I'm sure. I don't know if it had anything to do with me wanting to close it, or if they really were going to graduate the card on the date above, but I was pretty excited! I'm going to wait to see what they give me for a credit limit, and if it's something good, I'll keep it. If not, goodbye Wells Fargo!
Thanks for reading and I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
Hope it all works out for you. Keep us updated. I bank with Wells Fargo but I never got any of their credit products. I'm in the Midwest and Wells Fargo is selling all our branches to Flagstar Bank this year so not sure how much longer I will be a customer.
Good luck with your graduation and hopefully you receive a decent credit limit. On a side note, aren't you glad that you called back to speak with a different rep? It sucks that the first rep didn't share the additional information with you. Just goes to show how hanging up and calling back can work in your favor. Wishing you the best!

OMG yes! The first lady I spoke to sounded very condescending. She was like ummm no.... you need to pay the FULL BALANCE before you can close this card, in a really snotty tone. I'm always so happy and cheery when I call anyone, so I don't know what her problem was. The guys was much nicer and told me what I needed to know. I think his name was Rod? First Rick was the awesome dude who helped, and now Rod hehe.
