I have a 10+ year old Nordstrom store card with a $5000 limit. It's one of my oldest accounts and yet I've never been able to have it upgraded to VISA. I use it maybe once every couple of months. I have great credit with 800+ FICOs across the board.
Each time I called in the past few years they've always given the "we don't do upgrades any more" answer. But through a search on this forum I have seen the occassional success datapoints (latest ones in 2020). It almost seems like there are some luck factors or they "open it up" randomly from time to time.
If that's the case, anyone here has any recent DPs to share? For those who successfully got it upgraded (not new application, not store/VISA split), during what time of the year/shape of the moon etc did you make the request?
I believe if they come to you with an upgrade offer it can happen. Otherwise it's another application. When I applied I was offered the Visa Platinum or the store card. When approved my limit was $4500. Then they did a CLI to $16,000. I called in to see if they could change it to a Visa Signature. The answer I was given that whatever you get the day you apply is what you are stuck with unless they offer you an upgrade.
same thing with Macy's (differing issuers but same story). I have had the store card nearly 15 years. I wanted the Amex and kept reading that I'd be upgraded soon or one day. Well I called and they claim they don't allow me to initiate the request. I can apply for another card and that's what I had to do and was approved for the Amex. So now I have 2 Macy's cards open.
sometkmes they make things more difficult than they should be
