Re: Applying for AMEX in January for Backdating?

Just call the number on the back of your card and tell them you had an account back in 2006, and see if they can look it up for you.

I was recently approved for the Amex BCE. I had previously had a corporate card from AMEX from 2006 - 2012. I called a number from the forum and asked about backdating and they had no idea what I was talking about. Any idea of the right # to call or the proper way to ask about backdating? I recently was approved for quite a few CC's this week after closing on a new house and I know my AAoA is going to tumble a bit... i would really like it to backdate to 2006 for sure!!

Don't refer to it as backdating.  Tell them you had an account in 2006 and you would like to know if they can update your member since date.

Incidentally, what does it say when you log into your account online?  If it already gives the member since date as 2006, you were already backdated.  Sometimes the physical card just goes out from a batch of preprocessed cards with the current year already stamped on it.  If it is correct online, there is no need to get a new card, but you can if you want.

Keep in mind that this whole december vs january thing is only really relevant for those with a thin or recent credit history. If you have an AAoA of 1 year, then the extra 11 months you get from applying in January (or the extra 1 month if your first card with Amex by applying in December) makes a big impact. With time, though, the impact decreases. My Amex cards backdate to 1988 and I have a "thick" file, so there is no difference to me between 12/88 and 1/88 for another card. Ten years from now, whether you got your first card in 2013 or 2014 won't matter either.

+1

i am in the same boat.  My MSD is 1985, waiting till Jan won't matter at all.

Sounds good! And I assume it will be easy for him to take me off once I get my first Amex?

+1.  Just last month I had my card backdated from 1998 to 1981 and my score went unchanged.

Re: Applying for AMEX in January for Backdating?

Ahhh it instantly made sense after reading the first reply!

So for existing card members you want it to read 01/xx.

For new card members you would want to get the year as early as possible.

Thanks

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?
