For a second straight year Barclays has come through with a refund of the $99 AF with a retention offer of 5000 points with spend $1000 within 90days. The anniversary points of 5000 are still added to my account (hooray).
Guess I can't complain too much about their HP CLI.
Nice! I got my AF from NFCU refunded to me the other day!
I didn't get extra points though...very cool!

That's fantastic. How are they with granting credit limit increases?
@Racer202 thats awewsome for you. I haven't gotten a sniff of that even after asking about it for last two years smh.

@Racer202 Did you ask or was it presented to you?
Nice!
I didn't ask for (nor was I offered) retention a few months ago. I just said I wanted to close the account, and when they asked why, I just said I had too many credit cards.
I paid the first year $99 AF, spent ~$6k, took the ~111k miles (100+6+5), and walked away. Love that they don't expire, as I've Delta and United certificates/credits to use.
congrats, wonder if that tactic can be also applied to AA Aviator Red

You can try, but unless they have an option on their systems to waive it, then I would use that approach cautiously since most agents are quick to close the account upon you mentioning it and won't have the option to reverse it or reopen it.
If you are using the card considerably, you can definitely try. But, if you're only keeping it active by the occasional pack of gum purchase, I wouldn't expect much. Choose wisely!
I had 12k spend on it last year, not astronimical but a good amount.
I did not go the "close route" b/c I know how trigger happy they can be.
I'm actually suddenly using JetBlue a lot this year for unexpected travel back and forth to Florida, so I'm going to keep it. But, never hurts to try! My motto is... you can't be told no if I don't try.
