Hum is right on the inq's.  I did cold app and got approved with only a 2k sl.  But foot is in the door.  I think I would have done much better waiting a year.  I think you should wait at bit.  Get scores up a bit more.  They pulled EX on me.  So I do have the most inq's with them.  I don't believe they do the SCT with Barney's.

Totally false!  The inquiries did not play a factor in getting approved.  I have many recent and older inquiries with Experian and I was approved.  Secondly all of Barneys apps are cold, no pop ups for anyone.   Most of the credit cardholders of Barneys receive limits  of 700.00 to 2,000.00 and you "work" from there.  Maybe others want to get their foot in the door like you did!  There are great benefits for people opening Barneys like unbelievable CLI's which reduces your utilization and ultimately increases your credit score.  It is a hard pull on Experian and each individual needs to weigh the pros and cons and if it coincides with their goals.   I just got a measles 250.00 limit on Bon Tons and within one day of approval, my limit is over 10,000, so I ask you why should I have waited?  So 6 months from now they would have approved me for 500.00, lol!

There are more diplomatic ways to get your point across. Smiley Wink  And actually, you are both partially wrong. Approvals will vary with differing credit profiles, on some profiles 5 inquiries may get you declined, on others however you could have 100 inquiries and get a higher starting limit than most. It would seem that there is no rhyme or reason to it, but when the instant approval wheel is spinning it is looking at more parameters in your report than you even think exist.

Plus, way before Comenity Capital took over the BNY portfolio, it was all done in-house.  I was approved on the spot in the Chicago store for $8K and has reached a pretty high CL since (but I do use it fairly often).   When CCB took over and converted the accounts, they auto-CLI'd mine by another $10K.  Now, interestingly enough, the old account is still reporting on all CRs as open (not transferred/purchased) with the previous CL before the conversion.

And to tuolomne's point, since the outcomes can differ (new accounts, inquiries, profile, etc.), a colleague of mine was in the Madison Ave BNY store and was approved for $15K.  They called their dedicated line for the credit office and within a few minutes they upped the CL to $50K (I guess she was buying quite a few things Smiley Tongue).

Re: Barneys Question?

I've worked as a Project Manager for Trans Union for many years and I'm acutely aware of the dynamics of the credit industry but that isn't the point.  If I see incorrect information posted, then I will respond with my experiences. My experience is my experience and that is my truth.  I responded to that post because it began by saying Hum was right about inquiries when applying for a Barneys card, and it was based on my challenge to his post, so it was a indirect slight that I addressed, no more no less.

I have seen folks being denied for this card with inquiries being one of the reasons cited on folks' letters.  So, are you saying inquiries are not an actual criteria because evidently it does happen.

And, granted everyone's profiles are different and your experience may differ from others but I'm also one who tends to see that while some can have 50+ inquiries and get approved, there's going to be others who will not.  We cannot make a generilzation that inquiries (of course besides other factors) would not be weighed upon to some extent, just like the presence of new accounts, etc.

Both Pizza and Humuhumunukunukuapuaa have peaked my curiosity.  For those of you that have a Barneys card, what was your score when you got the card?  Also did you get it with SCT or regular applying?  Said I would not do another store card, but if my score is okay, then I will.  My EQ FICO 8 is 635, but EQ FICO 5 is 670.

My Experience:

My EX was in the 660s when I was approved for $750. 14 inquiries w/a thick file. No SCT. You have to cold app.

Upon receipt of the card, I used the automated system to get it to $10,900. At day 32 of having the card, I got it up to $21,400. Waiting to try again next month...

Keep both your credit and your body in top shape!
