Sorry to hear this. However, it doesn't surprise me at all! I think it is a case to make that it is better to use a CC than a Debit Card. (I won't use cash, except for the tip! I want those rewards!)
To the idiots who use it to purchase a plane ticket more power to them! It makes it much easier to arrest them! In fact if I were a governement agency I would make it fun. I would let them check in, go through security screening, take them to have a body cavity search, and then let them get to the gate. Then I would arrest them. I would let them be as incovienced as much as possible along the way. Who knows what else they might find along the way! I would make it as annoying as possible along the way and then give them a false sense of satisfaction about having gotten away with it. Then I would arrest them in front of everyone, this would make a nicer statement.
I also believe in the death penalty being used much more and for lesser sentences for more minor crimes. The people who do this should be made to work on 'chain gangs' until their debt is paid back for their actions. (In reality, what is so wrong about this method of punishment? Letting them sit in prison where we pay for their food, housing, and clothing is just a burden on all of us!)
I also check my accounts frequently to avoid any such things from happening without me noticing right away. I don't use my debit card for anything except to get cash at an ATM! I also check the ATM and look around. When I travel I put my cards in a metal wallet. I had a friend whose card number was stolen because it had a chip in it. He thinks it was done at the airport with a RFID type reader. (Yes, this is possible for those that have a chip in their cards. If McDonalds can use a card with Pay Wave or whatever, what is stopping a person from simply walking through a crowd and collecting numbers?) I think I only have one card with such a chip or I would probably use the metal wallet more often!
OP....Thank You for starting this thread. Good to read that your loss wasn't what it could have been.
And the discussion has been very interesting, good to read the variety of opinions on such a subject.
I think all of us can certainly agree that it's in our own best interest to be diligent with our accounts, whether using a debit card or using a credit card. As several posters have stated, some of us check our accounts daily/several times a day. Paranoia? Maybe. But I've yet to be ripped off. The cautions that have been shared in this thread are very valuable; hopefully many more will read and remember the lesson.

It's gotten to the point where if a business doesn't accept a form of CC, I just won't even shop there anymore. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd make such a choice.
I'm there now (well almost). I have just one ATM/debit card but it's never carried unless I need cash and the banks are closed. The account that the card is linked to was opened just for ATM transactions and has a zero $ balance until I transfer funds into it for removal by the ATM. I do it on my phone or computer, takes just a second and posts instantly. The account has no fees ever as I maintain sufficient balances in other accounts at that bank. They were happy to open that account after I explained the way I would use it. My bookkeeper is not nuts about it - but hey it works and be quiet and do your job .
Until I can tip porters, bellmen, valet parkers etc. with a CC I have to have a few bills when traveling. Everything else is credit card.
So did they hold you accountable for any of the charges?
That sucks that it happened to you. I never use my debit card unless I'm in need of quick cash at the ATM for whatever reason.

Wow, never thought about this chip thing before. Thanks for the heads up. I just PC'd my BoA card into the Travel Rewards card which has a chip. I'm also going to go to travel in about a month. Totally going to go with a metal wallet now. It won't be cute like the current wallet I have, but safety over physical appearance of my wallet anyday!

^ This. I'd rather continue to monitor my accounts versus paying cash and limiting credit card use. Fraud protection has always worked well for me the few times I've needed it in the past.

+1
In this day and age, for most of us, it's just so easy to set up alerts & monitor our accounts with our smart phones, there's really no reason why we can't catch something amiss as it happens.
I forgot that I had cash in my wallet.

You don't need a new card for that, i called Citibank and asked them to deactivate the mastercard part of my Debit card, took 60 seconds. Now it works as a reg debit card w a pin, never got a new card.
