Can/Should I get the Platinum Delta Amex?

The 70,000 mile sign up bonus seems pretty attracitve. I currently have the Delta Gold but instead of upgrading, I was thinking of apping for the Platinum. When I log into Amex it says "Request Upgrade" so I'm wondering if this is something I'll have to do in cognito mode. Will it even work?

I was going to get the SPG Luxury, but I figured with only a 100k SUB - it's probably not worth with that AF, especially since I already have the Plat.

Yes, you can apply for the Delta Platinum w/o upgrading from the Gold (that’s what I did). IMO, the companion certificate alone, more than makes up for the AF.

I didn’t go incognito, I simply cleared my history, searched cards on the website and applied.

As for the SPG Lux, that’s up to you. Even though the signup is disappointing to some, the current sub and $300 credit, more than makes up for the AF.

+1

After applying for the Platinum, it may make sense to downgrade your Gold to Blue if you want to keep the card open (and earn 2x SkyMiles on dining if you actually put spend on your Delta card(s)), or upgrade to Reserve if the additional companion certificate that also includes C+ and F fares makes sense for you (does for me).

Sigh.....I tried to fight the Reserve upgrade, but I think I’m going to do it as well. Especially after my last experience in main (with the nose picker) and there after, all my trips being in F......I don’t think I can go back.

I do have a trip in Feb that is C+.....everyday I’m getting closer to upgrading it. LOL.

Maybe you can also try to contact AmEx to see if there is any bonus for upgrading? 70000 miles does sound attractive though Smiley Very Happy

Usually the offers for upgrading from Gold to Platinum are 5k - 15k SkyMiles, and of course taking that offer would prevent you from getting an offer such as 70k in the future.

Re: Can/Should I get the Platinum Delta Amex?

My wife and I BOTH have 25,000 mile offers to upgrade from Delta Gold, the offers expire mid-October.  Still pondering what to do...she gets antsy about annual fees but as long as I can justify WHY we pay the fees she grudgingly goes along with it.

Taking her parents to Siesta Key in November, Comfort + seats, her parents are thrifty old Germans and would be aghast that we upgraded from the cheap seats, so I didn't tell them about it.

If you have the Gold Delta card, app the Delta Platinum as a separate card. Don’t upgrade. You can have multiple Delta AMEX cards, but only one SUB per type of Delta AMEX. The Blue has no SUB for anyone who already has one of the others.

A separate Delta Reserve app is also appropriate for the right SUB if you will use that card. The MQM from the Reserve helps status chasers.

Take your time, although the current 70k Delta Platinum Bonus won’t last forever.

The “upgrade your card” offer you see does not have an Upgrade bonus, though sometimes offers are made at low miles.
