USAA banking is a bank not a credit union, so anyone can bank with them, just the insurance and some other products are only open to those who have servered , family members etc just like other have said
I think a lot of people think USAA is a credit union though and they are not

You're right. USAA is not a credit union. One prime reason why anybody can bank with USAA is probably because they are a member of the FDIC and cannot refuse customers without a good reason.
Update for anyone that reads this far -- in the fall of 2013, USAA reversed their 2009 decision on non-military members. Inidividuals with no military affiliation can join USAA, but they only have access to a very limited selection of services, and Banking is specifically not available to non-military members (non-military members with existing banking accounts are grandfathered in, as long as they maintain that account).

I am very happy that USAA is only available for specific people. My car insurance with them is better than you can possibly imagine. Everybody wants to be a part of USAA, well do what I did 13 years ago join the military and the you can become "full" members. The way I see it everyone should be thankful that you can even bank with them, because they really are one of the best banks in america
I guess the military also taught you to be condescending. Why is the car insurance better than you can imagine is it free?

It's as close to free as you can get, while still retaining top notch customer service. I pay less per month for full coverage for 3 vehicles than most people I know pay for 2. Top that off with an insurance company that goes out of their way to get your vehicle repaired first and right... Oh, and did I mention the dividends they pay?
Trust me, I've done Geico and Progresive, Farmers too, and this IS better than can be described.

This thread was revived from a few years ago. Most of this information has been updated on more recent threads
Lol, 3-year old comments being replied to. As far as the recent discussion re: USAA insurance, it's not that spectacular. In a recent quote they were barely a few dollars lower than my current company.
