Wow some of you have way higher spending than me. I generally do 400-500 a month on it with most being groceries.

I charge everything to AMEX. From 1800$ rent to phone bills to groceries to auto insurance to "you name it". I travel a lot and MR points get me nice offerings on tickets.

For me AMEX is the best lender. This is my third year with their Platinum card and I have already had two retention offers of 50K and 25K (this year). I think it all comes down to how much spending you are giving them.

See these are the kinds of things I was reading about all over the internet when I googled their retention number. I guess it wasn't my lucky day! Flyertalk was full of posts about these huge retention offers. I've even heard of targeted 100k point offers on the Platinum card. I guess I don't spend enough! I was putting $2-3k a month through it though, which is nothing compared to some.

Just a thought but if you were really focused on getting a perk or promotional rate, you could just reapply for one of those offers but of course only if it fits your financial needs.

True, and it crossed my mind for a later date. I'll wait around to see if I get a good any good offers in the mail. I'd heard some folks were getting 100k sign up bones Platinum card offers. I'd pay the first year AF for that deal.

Right: $2-3K per month probably doesn't even put you on the radar as a valuable customer worth expending effort for.

No issues with AMEX service whatsoever. Robot reps occur even at AMEX occasionally, I suppose.

Great perspective you never know might show up in the mail, i'm not as familiar with all the promotional offers but I do remember a recent one for the PRG which was spend 1k in 3 months and get 50k points and annual fee free for one year. Good luck I really hope a good opportunity comes your direction.

Thanks for the kind words. That's the kind of promotional offer that would get my attention. With Chase, Citi, Barclay, and even Capital One all offering large sign up bonuses for their travel credit cards I'd think Amex would do the same thing to stay competitive. That was really my main gripe about the PRG. High AF, not much incentive to use.

Re: Cancelled my Amex PRG today

I don't understand. You called to cancel your card and are now complaining that they complied with your request?

I don't get this calling to cancel really hoping that they will waive some obligations under the card. If you want to have your AF waived, then call and ask for it to be waived. If you want to take advantage of an offer, call and ask about that. But I really don't see the value in calling in specifically requesting cancellation in order to get to the retention department with the actual intention of using the threat of cancelation as a leverage to get a retention offer. It is especially unlikely to succeed in successive calls, as they make notes on each of your calls and it becomes clear to the next person speaking to you that all you want is a retention offer.

I get the idea that finding out that you are not a singularly impactful enough customer for them to want to keep you with offers if you want to go may be disappointing, but such is the case for most of us, especially with prime lenders.

I do believe customer service includes rewarding loyal customers. Afterall, we're all consumers and we can choose who to bank with as well as which credit card we prefer. So in that light, I do think that a card company should make using their product more rewarding and strive to keep customers. In today's credit card market we have so many choices based on rewards structure and bonus offers that I think they should cater to us.

Indeed, we can choose who to bank with and what credit card to use. You are completely justified in choosing a different credit card company that you believe treats you better. Whether Amex should cater to you, though, is Amex's choice, not yours.
