Re: Capital One credit steps question

Nope, not your fault. It's not your credit. I am normally a cheerleader for anyone trying to rebuild, but honestly, if she is unable, or unwilling to find a way to remember to pay her bills on time, then credit just might be a bad idea for her. She could set a reminder on her phone, write it on a calendar, have a friend text her reminders, etc. She doesn't have to pay online, as long as she pays on time.

Re: Capital One credit steps question

If I can recall correctly, when I was in credit steps in 2011, I was late on by a few days on a payment and did not get the increase until the 9th month.

Re: Capital One credit steps question

I can't speak to a missed payment, But when I was in the program I had a returned payment because I had a new checking and typed one number wrong, bonehead mistake. I simply did a chat and asked and they said I would remain in the program, got a document stating that the clock would restart on my steps and it set me back five months, sucked but hey my mistake and I didn't get the boot, could of been worse.

Re: Capital One credit steps question

Am I the only one that not seeing any problem in here?

1. She missed a payment: No big deal as long as its going to be the 1st one in a year! Even if it reported as missed payment, they should be able to wave the fee and remove it upon request for the 1st time as a curtsy!

2. CapOne Credit Step: I have it, I hate it! at the time when I got my QS1 it sounded good, but now I want to remove it. I started with QS1 for 3K SL and then after 3mo requested CLI and got 10K, yay was happy for big jump.
Then was hoping in my 6th statement try CLI again for few more Ks but Credit Step kicked in and gave $500 only, try to do CLI manually and got rejected due to recently CLI (Credit Step). Therefore if I didn't have Credit Step they could have given much more then $500. Now I have to wait for another 6mo to do manual CLI.

3. Paying on Time: Overwhelming majority of people on this forum are the people who are rebuilding or had credit issue or any reasons! Anyone with FICO score under 750 means they did something wrong or could have done better!
The best recommendation for rebuilding credit and people with multiple credit accounts is AUTOPAY, just set up an auto pay for minimum balance on all her accounts and yours so you never have to worry about missed payments. Specially for mortgage. I have Auto pay and pay most of the balance each month.

On a personal note, QS1 is the best card you can have for rebuilding, have her use it as debit card. Pay bills and depending on what her limit is, make multiple payments per month if need to. 1.5% cash back adds up quick and security of having a transaction going through Credit Card rather then debit card that is tied in directly to your bank account. As you know it is much harder to dispute on Debit card vs. CC.

After you clear her late payment, call in and upgrade to QS with no AF and few interest free months.

Get her a smartphone, and put CapOne app for her! I did it for my 76 year old mother and she loves it and use it almost everyday. Show her how to monitor her Credit Score through CapOne or a real FICO Score like Discover Card. When they see what it is and they can help it go higher, they'll be very interested.

Thanks for the tips! I wish I wouldv'e known about waiving the late fee before I paid it anyway, maybe I can chat with them and have it credited to her account. She still owes a considerable amount so every bit helps. OAN, my mom is only 40 and has an iPhone 6 Plus that she only uses for Facebook Smiley Indifferent
