This may have changed. I was just declined for a new card (which they told I needed to apply for since they couldnt change my terms or offer a new CLI). They letter states they based the decision on my history with CAP1 (which has 1 late/overlimit in 4 yrs due to theft of my card) and no bureau reports were pulled.

No kidding?  Thanks for sharing, PurpleHaze!

Has anyone else had the same experience?  This changes things immensely if this is their new standard practice.

I'm in agreement -- something is changing.  My Cap1 card's potential CLs were listed at 300-3k when I applied.  I applied and got 3k and assumed I would never be able to go over that 3k.  Well, they bumped me to 3750 after 2 months.  (Great payment history, HA!)

Now I'm wondering if the 300-3k range was just for the starting limit, without respect to how high it could go.  Perhaps this is another thing that has changed.

Argh.

Re: Capital One

I started in 95 with a secured around 1000. somewhere around 99 or 2000 I think it went to unsecured at 3000 and then somewhere in between i got to 5000, then last year they bumped me to 7500 (most likely because I had paid it completely off) then about 2 months ago I called and asked for a apr reduction (not sure why i waited so long) and they pulled up my account and said i was a good customer and dropped it 5% to 14.9.

All btw with the same 'ol std green Cap1 card.

Re: Capital One

I started out with a Cap 1 $300 secured card in September of 2004.  They changed it to unsecured after 1 year and moved it to a $500 limit, which is where I've been "stuck" since.  Ugh...
