I was wondering who out there has more than one tier of the American Express charge card? I have had the Platinum card over 10 years, but don't find myself using all its rewards like the Uber, concierge, etc. The rewards that are now on the Gold Card would make me use it all the time. Anyone that has both, is it worth it? Are there advantages to why I should keep both? I feel like the concierge would be useful, I just don't what capacity people have used it for. Just looking for some advice. Thanks
As you climb the Chase Sapphire tiers, each card is a superset of lower card.
This is not true when going from Amex Gold to Amex Platinum.
Gold is generally about rewards whereas Platinum is about benefits.
I use:
Platinum (Travel Rewards) - Airline credit, UBER Credit, Saks Credit, Marriott/Hilton Status, Travel MR multipliers
Gold (Everyday Rewards) - Grocery/Restaurant multipliers
This setup only works if you can maximize both travel and everyday benefits from each card.
Having both Platinum and Gold can make sense. I personally don't have Gold because:
- I had PRG from 2014 to 2016 so am ineligible for a bonus.
- 90% of my grocery spend is at Costco or specialty retailers that (probably) don't code as grocery.
- CSR is about as good for dining in the USA, gives points on international dining, and has somewhat broader restaurant acceptance.
- I don't often eat at the restaurants participating in the monthly credit program.
I've used the Platinum concierge mostly to locate merchandise...places to buy certain gifts, once for places to buy things I forgot to pack for a vacation.
I have both. I think its up to the individual to figure out if having different charge cards is worth it.
My case, the Gold card is my "every day" card.
The Platinum gets very little use, but the benefits work for me:
$200 Uber credits/yr. I will certainly use up my monthly allotment of Uber credits.
I've already used $50 of my $100 Saks credit, and no doubt will take advantage of the other $50 later this year.
I don't travel as much anymore but the lounge access still comes in handy at times, as well as the yearly airline credits.
And one of my favorite features is access to the Centurion Suite at Staples Center. I can buy cheap nosebleed seats to Lakers and Kings game, and watch from the comfort of a suite. Nice to not have people stepping over you to get their beer and restroom runs! I'd almost keep the Platinum card for that one reason alone.
