Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

Hrm is this really an issue?

Seems like a common store card gimmick these days is to get a discount on a large purchase.  Those people aren't calling anyone, they don't even have the number to call at that point.

I try hard not to ever talk to a CSR unless there is no other way to get it done (closing an account which I probably do far too rarely lately).  For something like this I would just swipe the card with confidence and if something did happen plead ignorance but I think Saeren's last point is essentially correct: there was something else wrong for those weird reactions... and people here roll hard when it comes to pushing credit boundaries.  I explicitly don't bother with Sync so my usual behavior isn't tested with them, but given all the silly behavior some of their customers not even ones on this forum do, I would be stunned and amazed if there were an issue here.

Buy the thing, let it report, make the large payment right after statement cut (or right before due date even but fractional interest on my side is basically zero in a month, the last two loopy stupid days in the market not withstanding) will be fine.

Explicitly, don't call: calling for this is not normal in the market.  Anything abnormal could be flagged.  Not saying it is, but it could, and it would be easy for any lender to do and we know data is king these days.

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

People getting AA from sync are people that are opening too many cards. I maxed out both of my sync cards almost immediately and after getting them down to about 80% put them on the back burner with minimum payments while I paid other cards off.  Nothing happened. Granted, the total is only a third of yours, but they haven't flinched yet.

I believe patterns are what's more important in credit to a lender. You have a greater chance of AA if you always PIF and then all of a sudden have to carry a balance, then if you occasionally carry a balance for a few months. I intentionally do it on most of my cards when I get them to let them know they'll get their money. Haven't been bothered yet by any of them.

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

Card issuers WANT you to use their card heavily. As long as you pay it off (especially if paying more than minimum) you should be fine. Assuming you pay off 1k before the first statement, your utilization would be only 50% or even a little less. As long as the issuer views you as an overall responsible borrower, you should have no issues.

Congrats on the great new card and nice SL! Enjoy your 3k item! Lol

@PerArduaAdAstra  you're overthinking this. They wont get "spooked" unless you're making minimum payments the whole time, and the balances on your other cards rising.

You're buying online, so if it gets declined, you can call.

If purchase goes through (most likely case scenario), pay it down somewhat and move on.

You'll be fine using the card the way it was intended. Dont let incomplete horror stories put you in a position where you're managing your finances differently because someone else posted something on the webz.

It will be okay

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

As others have mentioned, I wouldn't worry much unless you have other issues that we don't know about like low scores, high overall UTIL, missed payments, etc.

Personally, I maxed out 100% both Amazon and Lowe's cards a few minutes after approval. I had to pay for the balance of my purchases with something else. On the Amazon card, I had a 12 month no interest promo and the Lowe's card was for 24 months. I divided the full amount into 12 and 24 months, and sent those monthly payments till the promo ended. I don't remember the exact amount on the Amazon card, but I believe it was about $2,200. On Lowe's card, it was definitely $5,000. I remember I got approved for $3k and then asked for a CLI to $5k upon approval.

I didn't have any issues with SYNCB. In fact, I got auto CLIs on both cards after a little while.

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

Synchrony has been known to close down new accounts that they decide are risky and I'm not just talking about myFICO reports. I've seen plenty of people complain about it on Amazon where they got the card for financing, put a charge on there with installments, and Synchrony closed the account after a "secondary review" so I see nothing wrong with OP wanting to be cautious. I read plenty of those stories on the Amazon site myself and almost talked myself out of the Amazon Store Card 12/2018 but the two common complaints were the billing site being down so I set up push payments and large promo balances on a new card getting the card shut down so I didn't do that either. Synchrony is a bad faith lender like AMEX in that they will both give you large limits but they expect you to only use a portion of the limits extended to you. A $3000 purchase should be fine but I wouldn't push it with a $4K one.

@Anonymous  if they were that risk averse, one would imagine you'd be a subject to AA. You have more than dozen new accounts, BK...and nothing happened to your Synchrony issued cards.

Sky is not falling and OP will be fine.

I haven't really demonstrated a major risk to Synchrony though and they were one of the few lenders I had when I filed my BK who didn't get burned (Amazon card thru GE Capital Bank with a $0 balance) plus my credit profile has dramatically improved since I was approved for my Amazon Store Card with a 640 TU 8 with major derogs besides the BK. I have no doubt if I go and throw a $5K purchase on my $6K Amazon Store Card that they'll slash all my other limits in a heartbeat. Most of us who have Sync cards operate with the knowledge that Sync is easy come, easy go.

And even beyond the AA issue, 68.2% utilization for $3K vs 90.9% for $4K. Maxed out is never recommended for any issuer, new other otherwise.

Re: Charging too much to a brand new Amazon Store Card?

I totally agree. I cant imagine this being a problem for anyone. This is no different than being in a store and applying for a store card to finance a purchase. You wouldn't think twice about it there. I say purchase it and at worst they'll call you to ensure you're making the purchase.

I imagine anyone that AA is happening to does not have a strong credit profile. There's more to the story than you're reading on MF or Amazon boards.

They just gave me $4400. I want to take advantage of 12 month 0% for a $3k item. I can put around $1k towards it before the first statement. I also have $500 on another $1400 Sync line of credit, but I'll probably pay this before statement cut.

I am so paranoid of having an account closed for charging too much too quickly. Do I need to worry about this or should I go through with my purchase?

Thank you.

I would be more concerned about the scoring effect of having such high utilization on the card.
