Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

I am interested in applying for the limited time Chase Saffire Preffered 80,000 point offer.  I have 3 new cards opened in 2021 and 4 that I opened in 2020 as follows(opening dates from Experian report):

  2/19/20

  3/25/20

  4/29/20

  4/30/20

When would I be safe to apply so to be under 5/24?  June 1, 2022?   Nothing is showing up for any new credit cards in the "Just for You" section on my Chase account

Also, I have another credit card (US Bank Visa Signature Card)  that I want to apply for after I get the Chase Saffire Preffered.  I know US Bank is very picky about inquiries and I got rejected a couple years back solely because I had 2 new cards within the previous 12 months.    My FICO Experian was(and is) about 780.   When would it be safe to apply for the US Bank card to avoid any Chase shutdowns and be approved?

Re: Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

All of the cards you listed from 2020 should be clear of the 5/24 rule. So, I think you are good on 5/24.

However, US Bank has its own 1/12 rule that you may or may not be clear of, but probably not unless the three 2021 cards were all early in the year.

When were the three 2021 cards opened?

JMO, good luck!

Re: Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

You could apply now for the CSP without 5/24 worries.

There are no guarantees but odds are that in your case Chase likely wouldn't have a big issue with you picking up 1 additional card.    Personally if it were me I would just go ahead and apply after a CSP approval but given that different people have different tolerances for risk you could consider waiting 3 months before applying at US Bank.

I may be in luck there.... the 2021 cards were opened 3/24/21,  and other 2 both on 5/13/21

Re: Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

I've read here, but don't know from personal knowledge, that US Bank counts the entire 12th month, so, you should be clear of 1/12 on June 1.

Chase seems to use the exact day, fwiw.

I think you could probably do it either way, get US Bank first, or get Chase first, because either way, you are under 5/24 and you do not exceed 1/12. But I might space it out a bit to reduce risk of whichever you get first getting squirrely.

JMO, good luck!

Re: Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

According to recent reports Chase really doesn't like card app bundling.  You're probably good to go with both, but I'd space them out by a few months to avoid getting auto-canceled by Chase.

Honestly I feel like USBank is harder to get with their very low tolerance for recent card apps or inquiries.  I'd probably do that one first on 6/1, then wait a few months and go for the CSP.

Good luck!

I think you're good to go on the Chase card.  And I don't think your picking up a single card from a competitor would bother them.

I can't believe US Bank is as finicky as it is reputed to be, because I got a card from them and I always have too many new accounts and inquiries. (Unless they have different standards for business cards; mine was a business card). In any event, I'm not a US Bank expert, and I defer to the experts on that.

Re: Chase 5/24 and US Bank question

@pete19103  I heard the Sapphire Preferred 80k bonus is set to expire at 6pm EDT May 31, so if you want to make sure you get that SUB, you should apply on or before May 31. Technically you are 3/24 now, so theoretically you should not be denied by the 5/24 rule. YMMV. Personally I would apply for the CSP anytime now so as not to jepordize the SUB. If you go to review before this SUB expires and then are approved after the new SUB starts, it seems like I remember reading some DP's that they got the new SUB. Or if that happens to you, maybe you can see which one is better and argue for the one you want. Last time the SUB was 80k, it went to 100k, and then down to 60k. Who knows what it will go to this time.

Regarding the US Bank card you are interested in: normally I would say apply for that first, but with the CSP SUB expiring, that changes my opinion - get the CSP first.

I also am interested in a USB card, and am planning my gardening for it. Based on my research of DP's, it seems their rule is more likely 3/12 - so you can be 2/12 and still be eligible for one of their cards. I know you say you got denied for being 2/12, but I wonder if there were any other factors surrounding that decision. I just talked to two different USB credit card CSRs this morning, and one told me you can be 2/12 and still get approved, and the other told me they don't have an X/12 rule, and that she helps customers who are 1+/12 apply for multiple USB cards on the same day successfully all the time! LOL. Based on all my research, I plan on applying in the beginning of the month following when I turn 0/6 and am 2/12.

So if you are approved for CSP in May, if I were you, I would apply for the USB card you want around December 1. You will be 0/6 then and 1/12. This will also get you past the three month window that many have reported that Chase watches you after opening your CSP. Or if you are feeling lucky, you could apply for the USB card September 1 - three months after CSP, and you would still only be 1/6 and 1/12!

Good luck

I tried applying a couple years ago and was rejected by US Bank solely based on the fact that I was 2/12 (had gotten both cards about 8 months earlier) That was the only reason list on the rejection letter(too many new accounts)

The rep on the reconsideration line told me to just wait 5 months and then re-apply.  Not sure if anything has changed since then

@calisig I applied for the USB Altitude Reserve late last year when I was 6/12 and was denied. They told me to reapply when I didn't have any new accounts in 6 months. Basically didn't want you actively looking for credit and see how you were using your recent accounts

Based on their advice, I reapplied when I was 0/6 but 4/12 and was approved. It was my first CC with them but I had a car loan with them for a few years.
