@clocktick wrote:After looking up what a poster mentioned above, "bust out fraud" I noticed the following: One or more payments have been returned. I would think that's probably the reason right there. Also, Chase declined a minor convenient store transaction I made recently even though it was within an hour from my home. Did you let them know you were travelling?
I had my checking with chase for a LONG time... They know I travel.... It would be more unusual for me to actually be home

@webhopper wrote:So, I'm at the store, and my card gets declined, which I thought was real odd since I had just paid my statement balance which was due on 4/5/12. So after I leave the store, I call customer service, and I found out that my account was closed... Wow.
I had just paid off my Chase Auto loan one year early which was for 36 months... I've had Chase Student Loans since 2007. I had a Chase Freedom in 2008... I've had about 4 other Chase auto loans in my lifetime. Chase really made me aggravated by closing my account.
I did refinance my truck through NFCU, and the new account is posting without the old account showing as closed. Would that have done it? My Discover also posted a large balance since I just bought a cruise with it. The statement balance was 3k, and I paid it down to $1200 already, which brings my discover balance to $1200. My Discover account is on a 6 month 2.9% APR promotion right now which I was offered in January. When I refinanced the truck, NFCU offered me their Visa, so I'm glad I took since obviously chase doesn't want my business anymore. The amount that I charged in the first Chase statement cycle was $1425, which I attempted to pay in full on 3/30 but the payment didn't go through due to a typo in entering my bank account info. So I noticed the payment didn't go through, and I checked on it on the 5th, and re-typed the info, and it went through with no issues.
Anyways, if Chase wants to close the account that's fine, but why give me an account if you don't want me using it? Anyways I'm getting married in May, and the charges on my Chase card were for the wedding. Our family income is around 180k annually, and I just received my bonus in the amount of 16k, so its not like i'm charging things that we can't afford to pay cash for. My amex statement closed on the 6th so I paid in Full on the 7th in the amount of $2953...
For those of you who are wondering, I put a lot of business expenses through my CC accounts (travel, supplies, etc.) which are reimbursed. I just bought a house, so I've been running things through the cards for the house as well.
Anyways
Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations, if Chase doesn't want me, its their loss, Amex is more than happy to benefit from my transaction fees!
The same thing happened to me 3 years ago. I went to buy some show tickets, I was declined.
I called Chase and they said my account was closed. I asked why I wasn't given a warning. He said he didn't know.
I then asked the reason why my account was closed. Again, don't know. I was told I had to wait for the letter explaining why it had been closed.
I NEVER got that letter. i had been with them for 3 years, with no late payments, EVER. There was no excuse for that.
On top of the fact that I opened a Chase checking account because I saw an offer for $150 if I open. Great. I followed the links and opened the account.
2 months later, still no $150. I called Chase and the rep on the phone said that she had no record of it. Transfered me to someone else.
The guy on the phone was rude. He was basically calling me a liar. He said that there was never a direct link way to open an account with a bonus.
It turns out I needed some sort of code. Of course, they refused to give me this code, so I promptly closed my account.
I will NEVER do business with Chase again.
Sorry this happened to you. In this case, I think Chase overreacted.
However, in ever credit card agreement or bank account I've ever read, it always clearly stipulates the issuer can close the account for "any" reason. They don't even have to give you a reason, though as a courtesy, they often do.

If they did indeed permanently close it, its fine... I do have NFCU cashRewards visa, which was a fully vetted offer after I submitted my bank statement, W-2s, investment account statements... etc for the truck refi. At this time, I'm glad I opened up the NFCU account, because I did want a Visa in my wallet.

I like your outlook.
I feel the same. If any business doesn't want me as a customer, then I'll find someone who does. There are way too many choices out there when it comes to banks, credit cards, and service providers.

Well, I called Chase, and spoke with their CSR.... Basically they were concerned due to the payment that was returned due to my Typo... I explained to the rep that it was a typographical error, due to me traveling and trying to pay bills from my phone. He was able to open it up and see that there was 1 digit wrong on the payment checking account, but that I had gone ahead and resubmitted the payment for the full statement balance once I realized that the account information was wrong.
He is sending it for reconsideration, since I manage my accounts well, and since I've been a Chase customer for a very long time.
This is why I stick to credit unions for the most part. I always get a courtesy phone call anytime something is amiss with my account. I think it's bizarre that they would just close the entire account altogether instead of just freezing it and contacting you. But I suppose they are too large a company for that now.
Chase just made its way to California in recent years and I had already heard too many negative things before they even arrived.
