I called Chase yesterday to request a CLI on my Freedom card. She asked me why I wanted an increase and I was honest with her and told her I wanted it increased to be able to upgrade to the Visa Signature version. So today I was on my Chase account and I am now getting an offer at the top for a free movie that is only for Visa Signature card members, but I don't show a CLI on my card. Hopefully this means it was approved, it just hasn't gone through!
Hope you have better luck than I did. I basically did the same thing and they said they'd have to do a HP and there's no guarantee that I will get an increase so I told them no. It's better to just app for a new card, wait a while, close it and transfer the limit over.
I have the Chase Amazon card and thought about calling and having the limit transfered to my Freedom and closing the account. I will wait and see what happens with the CLI.
Will keep fingers crossed for you. Update with results.

Heh, I also did exactly just that (close Amazon card and transfer the CL over
).
Well I just got online and did end up getting an increase. It was a lousy $800. Now I need to call and close my Amazon Rewards Card and have the limit transfered to my Freedom. Maybe down the road I will apply for Slate and do the same thing. Is there a trick to doing this with a CSR or do you just call and tell them you want to close the account and want the limit transfered to the other card?

No trick. Just a straight forward request. I did it via chat and it was done instantly.
I have had an auto increase on that card before after having it for 6 months. I will be calling to get my Amazon limit transferred over.

Sorry you took a HP for 800 dollar CLI. Its not usually worth bothering with Chase. Even with the HP they rarely give big bumps.
The best thing is definitely to do the limit transfer, though you dont want to do it repeatedly or youll raise flags. However, its ridiculous to me that that is really the only way to get a decent CLI with them, and its a workaround, not an actual CLI!
Very very occasionally people get auto CLI but its rare. To me with Chase you just assume and expect that the starting limit is basically the forever limit.
With every post like this that I read I'm getting less and less interested in Chase and their policies... Citi too for that matter.
