Citi AA plat question

I had the citi AA exec card and downgraded to the plat. I am trying to redeem my AA miles for a CX flight NCY-Hong Kong. I know one of the benefts of the card is you get 10% of the miles you redeem back (up to 10k miles I believe). My first question is do I have to do anything to get the refunded miles back or is the card linked to my AA account in a way that when I call in to book the reward its automatically done?

Also, for those of you who have redeemed on CX I see some business availability on flights out there during the last week of June, but I do not see any return flights that I can catch in July. Is it that I am on the cusp at the moment and so more reward seats will free up as I get closer to the second week of July? It puts me in the uncomortable spot of wanting to book an award there but then getting jammed up and having no way to book a flight back home. Also I know you can upgrade with miles to first if those awards open up, but is it also possible to switch flights on the award if I see another flight on a different date that has availability open up? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Citi AA plat question

Mine automatically credited my account. Check British Airways to see if there is JAL space open for the return. That's an awesome first trip! Most of CX's space will open up closer in. Don't forget that CX also announced that they were going to open the space up for their MP elites vs for other airlines. Could be seeing the effects now. I use BA to check space since you can't via AA for CX and JAL.

Good luck!

Thank you for the response. Actually JAL is a great tool for searching CX because it tells you how many seats are free. The problem is you can only search one class at a time.I tend to use BA dfirst for quick searches then dig down on JAL availbility. I'm not sure if they made the changes you are talking about yet, but I believe those refer to 11 month in advance bookings and not the last minute bookings. I had wanted to visit Japan with JAl but that availbility seems way more limited for short term bookings, which is why I switched to China. I think I am just going to book the iutbound business class flight now and then pray that a return flight opens up over the next two weeks.
