Let's say Citi has 1,000 customers with the hilton card. Citi knows the expevcvetd default and attrition rate to the portfolio and shared that with AMEX. This means on Jan r AMEX could expect 950 customers. AMEX is giving an offer based on 950 customers.  AMEX is not going to want nor like if CITI is going around them and converting customers they like to a brand AMEX is not buying.  Each customer that leaves beyond the expected ones, devalues the portfolio they are buying, which could result in AMEX paying the same amount but getting less.

American Express shouldn't care if Citi's customers want to product change to another Citi card before the conversion. Customers are free to close their account at any time and I'm sure AMEX would agree that saving the costs to print cards, print terms and condition booklets, and dealing with the customer service overload from who will want to close the accounts after the conversion is better for their bottom line.

On both sides of the fence on this one. If AMEX is supposedly restricting PCs to anyone that is a current holder of the Hilton they probably paid a premium to get Citi's Hilton portfolio intact and they would like to keep the customers intact for the transistion. But as some have pointed out whether it's being blacklisted, possible CLD due to total credit lines with them, or just plain not wanting to go to AMEX I can understand keeping the account or if all else fails then canceling the card. If anything we need to hear from AMEX to see how they're gonna handle this.

I remember K-in-Boston in a similar thread semi-joking Hilton making a FAQ with the included question that was basically "What happens if I'm blacklisted from AMEX?" and I think that's something they legtimately need to address.

Just to clarify, if you do get a PC to the Amex Hilton it would not prevent you from getting a bonus in the future.  The rule is that you can only receive a bonus once per lifetime on any card.  If you never had a signup bonus on a card, you are still eligible to receive it.

This is not what I got from chatting with AmEx rep.  I was told, as long as you have certain card, say AmEx PRG card, before.  Then you won't qualify to receive the bonus again, regardless if you ever receive the bonus.  It was clear.

So PC card to other bonus card is very bad.  Better and safer to downgrade it to non bonus card and keep it in shoebox.  Or just cancel it.

Well since the Citi cards won't be converted until January the simple thing to do for people who have a Citi Hilton and want Amex Hilton bonus is to get the Amex Hilton card now.

Indeed, that would beat the system quite a bit.

It is not that easy for people just to apply for a new card. You need to deal with Chase 5/24, bonus spending etc.  It is just simple to close the Citi Hilton.  When you ready, apply for the AmEx Hilton card later.  Also, you do not want so many AmEx dead cards.

No idea how Chase 5/24 fits into the conversation, yet alone the thread itself.

It's pretty easy to apply for a new AMEX if you 1) Want the bonus that bad, or 2) You're an AMEX cardholder already since it's a SP approval or denial.

The bonus spending on the AMEX cards are very easy to accomplish. The no AF AMEX Hilton has a $1,000 threshold while the other is $3,000.

Closing the card is as simple as opening it... A simple request on chat and it's closed.

Just stop.

It certainly matters.  You do not want to be forced to apply for the AmEx Hilton card now, ahead of the Citi to AmEx conversion.  If you have never received the AmEx Hilton bonus, you can apply for it any time you wish, not just the next two months.

In my situation, I've just applied 3 new cards this year.  So no plan to apply for any new card this year.  So hope to stay within Chase 5/24. This card is not hugely appealing.  I won't lose anything by closing it.

Re: Citi Hilton Update - Appears they are allowing PC's

I got off the phone with a CSR 3 times so far, and the first two told me that Citi is not allowing PCs from the card and I am welcome to apply for a new Citi card if I'm looking to remain a Citi customer. The third one told me that we'd all be receiving a letter in the mail a month or two before the conversion outlining what we can do, including PC options. Guess it's best to just wait??

Will there be a HP associated with the conversion to AMEX?

Just off the phone with Citi call center (overseas) people.  They said, this Citi Hilton card will be converted to AmEx Hilton on 1/1/2018.  They do not accept any product change to any of the other Citi cards.  I'll try again next week when I can reach the call center in US.

Definitely I do not want to get converted to AmEx Hilton.  We can still apply for another AmEx Hilton card and get the bonus.  The conversion will kill it.  Not much loss since this card is only two years old.

Contacted another US based Citi rep.  The Citi Hilton card can't be converted to another Citi card.  There must be some agreement between City and AmEx to prevent City from taking the future AmEx customers.

I'll cancel this card.  Then wait for another opportunity to get on Citi wagon.  Goodbye for now....

That is strange as I had two options for PC's..  Is it a YMMV type thing? as I certainly do not lie not saying you said that btw ..  I will go back to the recorded conversation if needed... Strange as DOC had a few scenarios of people being able to PC and alot not being able to then kinda went away a few weeks ago I had no offers then tried today and had two..  Possibly due to me having so much available credit at amex, doubt they have access to their systems that I am offered this?  Doubtful just trying to figure out why I had the offers and I will hold them to it due to recorded line if they try to back peddle

Possible HUCA it until you get someone willing to work with you?

another edit BTW mine was a us based CSR that took my call earlier today

another edit she also metnioned it woudl be another card number mostly guessing due to being a MC, but would be same open date and account history

I do not doubt you got the offer. It's great if it does PC for you.

For me, I really should close this card anyhow, because it just gets in the way of my future apps, either Citi or AMEX are hindered with this card in my wallet. It's that useless to me.

Did not even have to talk to a person at Citi. Called up and used RoboLady to close the card with  just some simple voice commands.

Sometimes closing a card is as fun as applying for a card. Also relaxing because it takes out the card management from my future, seeings as I have not used the card since June.

Which is rather weird since every time I instruct the automated system that I want to cancel a card, a U.S based agent is always willing to give me a generous retention offer. Although I could imagine a retention offer on the Hilton cards is no longer in Citi's best interest.
