Clarification of USAA Membership...

Hello Everyone,

I know there's been a lot of discussion regarding the requirements
for USAA membership, so I took some initiative and spoke to someone
in USAA's customer service department just a few moments ago.

You DO have to be in the military or be a family member of someone
who is serving.

You can also apply for membership if you are retired from the military
or are a retired government civilian, but you have one (1) year from your
retirement date before your enrollment period expires.

I did ask the customer service rep that I'd heard from other people that
USAA non-members could apply for credit cards, lines of credit, etc but
insurance and investment products were reserved for members only.
She told me this is NOT true. Only members who meet the above criteria
can take advantage of their entire product line.

I apologize for any confusion this may have caused people in the forum
who were interested in joining USAA. But at least now we know what the
deal is.

If you'd like to call USAA directly, their toll free number is 800 531 8722 .
Reps are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Enjoy your evening!

Re: Clarification of USAA Membership...

Very interesting...I've confirmed all points on prior calls except for: "retired government civilian" are eligible?

Is it for feds who were military before?

Thanks for posting this --- I think much confusion is due to many recent policy changes enacted by the new CEO.

Re: Clarification of USAA Membership...

Hi Pj,

Thanks for the question. I happen to fall into
this category and that's why I asked.

If you're a retired government civilian who worked
with the military (Dept of Defense, Dept of Army, Navy, etc)
you have one (1) year from date of retirement to join USAA.
A lot of retired government civilians did serve in the military
like I did, but that's mostly coincidental.

Same deadline applies if you're retired military or if you've
separated from military service.

And as I mentioned in the previous post, USAA members can have
their family enroll as well. Of course, active duty members
(and their families) are eligible to join.

If you still have questions just give USAA a call. They're super nice.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the evening!

FBI & CIA employees also eligible, regardless of prior military service.

Re: Clarification of USAA Membership...

Your're welcome Sylvia. It's my pleasure

The CSR I spoke to at USAA did tell me that they have a specific department
that answers eligibility questions and helps new members enroll. They are open
from 8am to 7pm Central time (USAA is in San Antonio, TX).

So if a part of you still has eligibility questions, just call toll-free 800 531 8722
first thing tomorrow morning. You do have to go thru a voice prompt, but when
asked just say "I'm not a Member" and then "Credit Card" if you're interested
in getting a cc from them. A live person will come on and direct you to the
proper department. This sounds a little tedious, but it happens really quickly...

Hope this helps you. Enjoy the evening!
