Meh. Point taken although the situation is completely different. I wasn't unable to get approved for cards nor was I even thinking about axing a card. It's OP's choice but you and I both know the doors Synchrony could have opened. A year from now that would have been a $10K card. 🤷‍♂️

I HIGHLY doubt this would have turned into a 10k card. Esp with the current pandemic and synchrony cutting people off. This card probably had a high chance of being closed early due to non usage due to their recent actions. As mentioned too much pain to justify a small purchase just to keep it open and never see a credit limit increase. 

 

Perhaps when things improve hopefully economically i'll go for that WF Propel but this wont be for quite some time. Already know right now it will be a automatic denial.

Store cards that are not Visa, MasterCard, etc. are often listed as "charge card" as the type on consumer reports, but are revolving credit products and still counted that way for scoring purposes.  Here's my Lowe's card.  It can't be used outside of Lowe's, so it's a charge account, but the account has revolving terms.  I don't think any lender is going to look at a card with a $35,000 limit as a subprime account.

The "I'd better close this so it reports as closed by consumer instead of closed by lender" thing is completely blown out of proportion.  This makes zero difference, unless you are undergoing a manual review for lending.  Certainly if you're going for a mortgage later this year and a potential lender sees that you had 7 accounts all closed by lender in May 2020, that might give the impression that (as one example) you were late on all of the cards while having other factors of high risk, but not late enough for them to report 30+ days late to the CRAs.

 

Why would someone need to check an account every week for fraud?  Isn't once a month often enough?  My Amazon card has been opened for 8 years; I had a single fraudulent transaction in 2016.  (And even in that case, I don't understand why they allowed the transaction.  The card is attached to an Amazon account, and they obviously have the purchaser's account information.  If the purchaser's Amazon account doesn't match the Amazon card information, it really shouldn't be going through anyway.)

I check weekly for fraud as if something happens it's best to deal with it as quickly as possible instead of waiting till next month to check. 

 

Thanks for the heads up about the charge card. I assumed these would all be reprorted as a credit card. Why it's reported as a charge card doesn't make much sense but it sounds like at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

I edited my post up above to show how my Lowe's Card reports on TransUnion.  It's a charge card because it's not a bank card that can be used anywhere the payment network (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) is accepted.  Technically, any store card that's not also a widely-accepted credit card is reporting incorrectly if it shows "credit card" or "flexible spending account."

 

Weekly just seems like overkill.  One of the main reasons to use credit cards is for consumer protections.  If you had noticed fraud on your account a month later, Synchrony would credit you for the fraudulent charge immediately.

Due to the current pandemic a brand name bank is unlikely to give me a card right now anyways so I figure that is a moot point. The $120 SUB is why I signed up for it in the first place and this was worth the HP imo. To others may not so much.

 

At the end of the day I accomplished my goal and no real harm IMO. As I mentioned before previously I don't borrow money and don't have prime so the perks of it were pretty useless to me anyways. If i get forced in a position that I need to borrow money i'll make budget cuts before I do that.

I feel compelled to ask... if you don't use Amazon Prime why did you even bother with the card?

As long as you're fine with it, that's all that matters. I agree $120 would be a good use of a HP and I've done the same for even $25 (Marvel). I just generally keep my cards until they at least turn 1 year old to not look like I was going just for the SUB. 

I think you had the wrong idea about Synchrony shutdowns. Most of those either had a bunch of Synchrony accounts, bad credit, or both. Synchrony can be twitchy but you have to give them a reason to be twitchy. Don't be scared off from Sync by a few scattered reports of shutdowns. They have some decent majors like Marvel and PayPal Cashback and tend to be pretty friendly to thinner files.
