Now In marriott rewards you can choose to earn either points and miles, but earnings differ based on hotel brand.

You earn 10 base points, or 2 miles per dollar on ALL qualifying charges at (room service, hotel restaurant, spa services, and so on)

  • JW
  • Autograph Collection
  • Marriott
  • Rennaissance
  • MVC

You earn 10 base points, or 2 miles per dollar on room rate ONLY at

  • SHS
  • FFI
  • Protea
  • CY
  • Moxy
  • AC
  • Gaylord
  • RC

You will earn 5 base points or 1 miles per dollar on room rate ONLY at

  • RI
  • TPS

You will earn 2.5 points or 1 mile per dollar on

  • MEA (Room Rate Only)
  • ES (All Qualifying Charges)

Recently stayed at Marriott, points were awarded based on room rate.  It's been  several month's since I stayed at a Rennaissance so I can't say to be sure, but Marriotts do not include restaurant, bar, etc in the points calculation for the stay.  (Obviously, does count on the Marriott CC)

Wow .... I had never realized this!

I just went through my recent bills.  Can confirm only room rate received points at the Courtyard.  At the full service Marriott's, I received points on room, restaurant/bar and business center, but not parking.

Honestly I feel the splitting hairs on the points and not being transparent about it to be annoying.  As we know Marriott's cater to business travelers.  I would expect that most business travelers such as myself eat and drink in the hotels because of the convenience, and assume they are receiving points for doing so.  I mean we are not eating there because the food is great!

The hotels listed in the original post as receiving points for room rate and incidentals(JW, Autograph, Marriott, rennaissance and MVC) do earn points on these charges. All charges need to be charged to your room. If you didn't receive points for charges charged to your room, you need to contact Marriott rewards customer service and they'll get you the points.

@silkykitty

Yeah, it's sad that we don't get points for parking. That (as well as discounted /free parking for elites) was something that a few of us did bring up this weekend in Houston.
