I just tried for a CLI from Capitol one, no dice! I have had the card since February and got an initial $1,000. Using the backdoor number I asked to speak to the supervisor and he explained I am on the "step" program... Eligible for an increase in Sept. to $1,500. I explained I needed the increase b/c we (wife also) use it for groceries and gas and I have put over $8,000 through the CC since opening it. Still no dice. I have to make at least two payments a month to keep it under the limit. I guess I might have to apply for a different cash back rewards card with a higher limit...
Any suggestions? I have a EQ score of 739. Utilization is around 7-9%. Pay everything off each statement. I do have 5 inquiries on y report, most within the last four months (New cards at Cap. one, ChaseJC Penny, and a new car).
One solution: move on to a better card if you can.

Your score is 739? Is that a FICO?
AmEx is a good option (AmEx pulls EX) Discover (EQ for me in NC) Citi (EQ for me) Barclays (Pretty much exclusively TU)
I'm not sure what your reports look like but if you are in the 739 range all across the board, you may have luck with the CC's I've listed.
Best of Luck!!

New inquiries, new cards, new auto loan. He got no luck with AMEX and Discover.

I just got approved for a Discover card and I have a quite a few new accounts in the last few months. I didn't get an instant approval but I did get a call from an account specialist who went over my app and did ask about the inquiries and new accounts. I explained why I wanted each one and he said OK your approved. So he may have a chance with Discover.
you should try a real CC like Discover,AMEX,Citi,BoA if you want to get CLI every 6 to 1 year.

Thanks for the information. That is encouraging. I have been getting several mailings from Discover and AMEX lately. I guess I need to read them to see if I am actually pre-approved. Can I rely on these mailings if they say they are pre-approvals?
Discover More somehow managed to get my info and send me a pre-approved offer. The pre-approved offer was for 9 months 0% on new purchases and 15 months 0% on balance transfers - on their website there was one that was the same except the new purchases was 15 months as well. I asked the CSR about that and she couldn't get me approved for the 15 / 15 offer but she got me approved for the 9/15 one that I got sent the pre-approval for. They also gave me my highest limit - I just did a mini-app spree and got a $5k limit out of my CU, a $2k limit with AMEX for their Costco card, and $7500 for Discover.
Meanwhile, my Capital One from my pre-good-score-days is stuck at $500 and I expect it to never ever ever go up. I called a few months ago to ask for a CLI and the reason for denial was "credit limit increases are not available for this account at this time". Literally, I got a letter in the mail saying that as well. As if that's somehow an explanation.
One more question here are my inquiries:
Inquiries that may be affecting your FICO® score
February 10, 2011 | Chase Bank |
February 10, 2011 | Cap One |
February 09, 2011 | Csc Credit |
February 09, 2011 | Toyota Mtr |
February 09, 2011 | Hnb Cin |
February 09, 2011 | Santander |
January 12, 2011 | Key Bank |
December 15, 2010 | Cbelltel |
November 15, 2010 | Hsbc Nv |
They are counting 9 inquiries, would the four for the car loan only count as one? Also, do they consider the telephone inquiry as less damaging? I forgot about the Key application.
I believe any inquiries for the purpose of an auto loan would count as one inquiry, so long as they were done within a 14 day period.
