Crazy idea, but hear me out!

Re: Crazy idea, but hear me out!

I have a payment plan set up for some back taxes.   Payments run 250.00 per month.

I use my quicksilver and earn 1.5 % back.  They charge 2.25% fee plus .30 for each transaction.  So a net cost to me of  around 2 bucks.

Even though I could pay it with cash or check with no fee.  It is easier for me to keep track of with the card.

Now I pay my quicksilver off each month.  But still a similar situation.  If doing it on the card works for you, great.  Just be careful and don't let that balance sneak up on you at the end of the promo.

This is of course subjective, but if it were me I would think really long and hard before doing this.

The fee charged for the transaction would be more than the rewards, so you are losing money from the beginning.  Since you mention it is possible to send a check that would be my choice... I know stamps have a cost, but it will be much less than you'll lose in fees, and that would keep you from having to bother with the ATM or the courthouse.

The only instance I can see this being a good idea is if you are expecting a windfall or other large payout of some type in the near future (to pay off the balance); in that case I might consider paying with the credit card.  Otherwise, it's the same as paying for gas and groceries with a no-rewards card... it's generally just not a good idea unless it's a dire emergency.  Financially, it just doesn't make sense.

Just my 2¢. Smiley Wink

Time has value, how much is admittedly subjective.

To give an obvious recent example, I'm seriously rethinking my school plans now.  I need the 4 year degree, I should do it at a UC campus, but I live call it an hour away from UCLA and and hour away from UCI, and I just spent the last 4 years working on my credit and finally obtaining a mortgage.

It was already starting to drag even optimizing my schedule to a 3 day class week, and in the summer I'm looking at all 5 days at one point unavoidable, or 10 hours, or give or take 9% of my waking life.  Lame, and worth spending money to optimize that out of my life.  This doesn't of course include the car expenses which pencil out to around 1K/month... but long story short I'm really becoming sorely tempted to just pack up everything into storage, take some clothes, school books, and computer and go sleep on an air mattress on someone's floor for $300/month and just rent the condo out (for like 1800ish) and have a better quality of life.

Anyway all that to say, don't discount the time involved in any transaction, and even for something like going down to the post office (which truly sucks in my neighborhood), a convenience fee is well worth it to skip that insanely absurd mess.

Re: Crazy idea, but hear me out!

It definitely depends on how willing and able you are to use non-credit card options. Driving around town to physically take the money to the bank would absolutely be a no-go for me. I'm also not really a fan of the hassle of postal mail, but may consider it. If you're truly only netting about a 1.35% fee, I'd probably go for it for convenience...of course I guess it also depends on the size of your child support payment. On the other hand, I'd probably not go for it if it codes as a cash advance. I'd definitely make finding out a priority and would call your lender as well as the state agency taking the payments.

As far as the 0% thing vs a BT with a 5% fee, I agree that the way you're planning to do it makes sense. If you can save the 5% fee and earn a 1% rewards rate by doing new purchases (child support) to move the balances that absolutely makes sense. However, another factor to consider is how long that'll take. If you're stuck paying high interest on the non-0% cards for 3 or 4 months while you're putting everything on the new 0% card and using the money that frees up to pay them off...well you may end up paying more in interest in the short-term than the 5% savings and 1% earnings would get you. However, if you can get those balances cleared off the regular cards and onto the 0% card fairly quickly then I'd definitely do it. I'd recommend crunching the numbers and figuring out exactly (or as close as possible) what each option will cost you.

I think I'd probably go for that. I can't stand commutes personally.

CHeck with your CC issuer before you do it...FYI...DH just made a payment for an old child support fee through our states child support website and it processed as a cash advance...lesson learned on that one...I told him to check first but he didn't listen come to find out his debit card wouldn't have processed the same. He paid the little state I think was 2% fee...then the cash advance fee of a minimum of $10 on the card and immediate interest charged even though the card was PIF before the statement cut.

Would you be willing to disclose the state and CC issuer involved?

I just found out I can pay child support with a credit card. The fee is 2.35% which isn't bad considering no more bank trips (to my bank's ATM to get cash and then to the only bank in town that accepts the payments) or trips to the court house (metal detectors...how inconvenient...right?) or no more stamps/envelopes if I mail it in. Plus, the card I am using gives 1% cash back so that will offset some of the fee.

The main reason why I chose to do this is because the card I will be using has 0% for 18 months on BTs and purchases. My original plan was to BT a few small balances onto this one to consolidate into one card payment. The fee for BT on this card is 5% so instead of paying the 5% up front for BT, I can use the child support cash to pay off the other cards.

It's really just a 'Rob from Peter to pay Paul' type scenario, but I don't see any flaws in the plan. Do you?

Yes, this will work, because you are avoiding the 5% BT fee, as others have noted. I call this type of operation a "Balance Transfer In Place". Check the payment coding, but it likely will be a regular purchase if you are going through a payment processing group.

What are your other cards that currently have balances? Because many cards have ongoing / recurring BT offers, so there could be suggestions for future BT steps.

And while we're at it, what is this card that charges 5% on a BT fee? That's painful.

That is a lot. Last week I got an offer from Chase to do a BT to my Freedom at 0% for 12 months (I think, don't remember for sure. May have been longer than 12 months) for a 2% BT fee. I was rather surprised since that's not one of the cards I usually get BT offers on; Citi and BofA are continually mailing me offers and Discover usually has something they're offering online, but I never see BT offers on my Freedom. A 2% BT fee also stood out as a surprisingly good rate. I definitely would have taken them up on it if I'd needed a BT.

IIRC the fee for a balance transfer on Wells Fargo cards is changing from 4% to 5% on 5/1/2016.

It's a very effective way of keeping people from taking advantage of a cash advance unless they plan to keep it for a while (which at 0% isn't usually a problem), since for short-term needs there will likely be better alternatives.

Wells Fargo "Rewards" card. Rewarding me with high BT fees lol

Just to update as promised...The transaction went through as two separate normal charges. One for the original child support amount and another coded as the convenience fee. I live in Indiana and they use a company called Value Payment Systems to process the charge.

Edit: Wanted to add that the transactions both coded as:

Re: Crazy idea, but hear me out!

Thanks for the update. It will be interesting to see if those categories show as purchase or cash advance.

Re: Crazy idea, but hear me out!

The statement cut and charges came through as purchases. Will continue with this plan....
