No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
If I'm near my max total CL with Amex (I doubt I am) would it be good to close BCE before applying, losing some of my total limit but knowing Amex would likely extend it again in the form of credit on a new card?
Or should I keep all cards open and, if the app encounters any trouble, say I'm willing to close/reallocate as needed?

This is actually a very good question and one I'm going to keep on eye on for answers because this is my dilemna if I ever decide to get any more revolvers in terms of available credit left with AMEX.
I would suggest just offering to reallocate credit lines if you need to recon. The official Amex line is that there is no limit to the number of revolving credit cards that they will issue to a single person, but it will depend on the cardholder's profile. There are indeed a handful of non-Citi-Hilton "Six Carders" here, but many posters here have run into snags anywhere from 4-6 cards, with many of "The Blogs" stating that the maximum changed from 4 to 5.

You were at the 5 card revolver limit with the two Hiltons, SPG, Delta, and ED.
Yes. I didn't think the business card would count against me but it did. I'm still thinking of dumping the Delta next year since I don't really use that card anymore.
This blog here has a ton of data points on the matter
