Am I an idiot for wasting a Chase slot? Please talk sense into me. November is going to be a big international spending month for me (UK). Any thoughts on a card for both SUB and staying power?

Not at all. I'm in the same situation as you. Besides getting denied for my very first credit card ~13 years ago (no history), I'm well off enough now to not worry about getting declined for anything that interests me. I recently went 6/24 and I have no worries about it. I'd only worry about 5/24 if there is something you really want from Chase. Although, if you are going abroad for a while, I'd shop around for a no FTF Visa.

I've reached the point in my credit journey where I don't really have to worry about approvals anymore. FICO 8 is ~810, oldest account is 11 years, utilization consistently under 3%, etc. A rational person at 2/24 would get a CSP and stack those UR points. And yet... I want a Discover card... USAA took care of me early on so I don't have an old "getting started" Disco still in the sock drawer. It seems like a great company with top tier support and decent rewards. For some reason it still feels like a hole in my lineup.

You do not need a Discover card. You don't want to waste time figuring out which category is in force for 5%. And you don't want to waste space in your wallet with a card that isn't accepted in so many places.

IMHO the only thing it's good for is its balance transfer offers, but (a) they've been making them less available lately, and (b) they're no better than the offers you could get from a credit union non-rewards platinum card.

Looking at the cards in your wallet, it certainly would be a good idea to diversify, but not in that direction.

If you want a good travel card, I would suggest Citi Premier or Chase Sapphire Reserve.

DISCOVER is accepted at restaurants, gas stations, Amazon, and the other 5% categories. A very small percentage of places don't take it, and those are mostly in the 1% categories.

And how hard is it to activate the 5% categories? Lol, set up a reminder and you'll get a link emailed to you to do it. If activating a category is that tough to do, I bet pulling the card out of your wallet is a real chore too.

Shut the front door!

That is blasphemy! My life will not be complete until I get my Chase Co-Branded Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Priority Visa Signature Card.

And then you have to PAY THE BILL!!!! You have to login and stuff, find and click the statement link, find the right statement, open it, look at it, and then go back and find the Make a Payment link way over there on another tab, and then have to decide if I want to apply my cash back as part of my payment!

Forget it. Don't get DISCOVER!! You don't need all of that aggravation.

You mentioned International Spending. How widely is Discover accepted in the UK?
This is a very good point. I went abroad to Germany and Prague recently. I had a brand new Discover IT Cash (restaurant rotating this quarter) and Savor One card. The Discover card was only accepted at one location the entire trip and I tried everywhere because eating out while traveling is something I consider a highlight of trips. The Savor One was more frequently accepted. My CSP was accepted everywhere but I left it at a gas station halfway through the trip. We realized an hour later after driving off and I was able to cancel my CSP on the app within a minute. I had a new one in the mail when I was home a few days later. I think chase is the better option if you are traveling. I do love my discover card and will be trying to maximize the one year rewards but go for chase first in my opinion.
