Discover "heavy usage"

I've been reading on here that discover likes heavy usage for cli. But I'm curious as to exactly what that means.

I've  had  my discover it for about a month and have used it everyday for coffee, gas etc. but no real larger purchases and not much more then 30% utilization and will pif of course. Does that count as heavy usage or should I be making larger purchases?

Re: Discover "heavy usage"

DIscover likes to see a balance when you ask for a CLI (at least that's what been succesful for me). It doesn't mean you have to pay interest on it, but letting the balance be there when you ask seems to work in people's favor although there is no guarantee.

You are doing it right. Don't overspend in hopes of a CLI. Continue using the card for your everyday purchases and then pay it down. Leave a balance when you ask for the CLI. Although nobody can tell you whether you'll get it or not, these things seem to be helpful with Discover.

It's only been a month...typically you have to have it for 6 months before they'll give you one. So just keep going with your current usage and you may very well get it.

Re: Discover "heavy usage"

Im my experince "heavy usage" with Discoveer makes no difference in getting a CLI.

I put through around $30K the first year on my IT card and it took several attempts with underwriting to get a CLI a year later and they only bumped me from $2500 to $4500.

Ive seen many posts of people who barley used the card and got big CLI.

Discover seems to favor those with not too many other active cards in their profile and not alot of new accounts.

Re: Discover "heavy usage"

Heavy usage isn't required to get a CLI. Your account is eligible after 90 days for a SP cli. Have some balance and use the card regularly and you SHOULD be ok.

Please note that there are some people who just simply can't get a CLI from Discover to save their lives. I, on the other hand, got a 4400 increase when I asked.

I've been putting a lot of usage on my IT Miles (~ $12k per month for the first year bonus).   I'll see if a CLI is available after 90 days.

Did you try their CLI button already? It seemed like Discover has loosened their CLI noose a bit over the past couple of months; probably not as much as AMEX has done with their 60-day rule but still worth a shot.

Or are you referring to auto CLIs?

If your limit is 5k or more, I'd say that's heavy enough.

If your limit is 2k or less, probably pushing up to the limit and then paying it after statement (may hurt your scores a little) is a better idea.

For me, the first CLI took a HP but all others were SPs and came at regular intervals (3-4 months over the past 12 months, 3 weeks or so for the last two). I used to put a decent amount of use for the first year with some balance always being there. I made good use of their 0% APR. Once it was gone, I used to PIF before due date. I'm starting carrying some balance again with their 0% coming back.

SP CLI.   But I've only had it for two statement cycles so I thought I would wait

I guess waiting is okay if you're not constrained by your current limits !

BTW do you still intend to SD it after a year or do you have plans to PC it into a Discover It (if that's an available choice) ?

Use the Discover website chat feature to find out what your eligibility date is. That's what I did. My CLI was a 7-10 day message, but called and just had to answer one question to get approved.
