I really haven't needed anything from Citi since opening the card. I can confirm that Discover has one of the best Customer Service teams. All of my problems have been resolved regardless if it's a phone call or chat. The wait-times are usually minimum if any at all and it's 24-hours a day.

When it comes to rewards though it sounds like the custom cash is better since you can pick your category?

That really depends on your needs. The flexibility of the Custom Cash card is great, but only because I also have other rotating cards. The card alone is only offering a max of $25 per month on the 5% category. If choice is more important and you can only chose one of these cards, it sounds like Citi is the way to go.

Doesn't the discover card also have the same limit of 5% cash back too since 1500 per quarter equates to 500 per month? Seems like both cards only allow up to $300 cash back per year from 5% spend but since flat rate cards usually pay 1.5% or so that means using the 5% cards save even less money per year than that even if you always max out the categories.

Yes, all of that is true. But you were asking about which of these 2 were better. My point was that you get the same max value from the 5% categories. So, you would have to decide which is more important to you if you were only going to get 1of these 2 cards.

I have both the Custom cash credit card and the Discover card, and I can say that customer service from Discover is so much better then Citi bank. I have found that Discover has best service of all the banks out ther. You can read on my Custom cash approval thread this what problems I had using the custom cash card at walmart and how easy it was to use my Discover card as a back up.

Just remember that the Citi custom cash has 200 dollar bonus for 750 dollar spend in three months which is about 26 percent return when trying to figure out which card will give you the most value for your spend.

Although I do not find myself having to call often (very rare actually), I'd say Discover has an edge over Citi in terms of service. Generally shorter wait times, agents tend to be more empowered and/or understanding about issues, etc. I wouldn't count this as an overly major consideration in getting the card though. Citi has been fine. As noted, the $200 bonus for $750 spend is pretty generous, and the $500 a month cap equates to the same thing as the $1500/quarter from Discover.

With Discover you're at the mercy of what they choose for categories. Some quarters you may get little to no use out of it and 1% on all other spend isn't compelling. Custom Cash automatically gives you the 5% on your top category, albeit among a predetermined list.  Having had the Discover rotating card for many years, I can say that overall, the categories have gotten somewhat narrower over time, tending towards specific merchants vs broad categories. Still, they have staples like restaurants and gas throughout the year.

Doesn't discover also usually do groceries at least 1 quarter of the year? Their target category isn't good since the red card gives the same 5% discount at the register.

Yeah, Discover typically does groceries at some point in the year.

Discover does groceries in the first quarter each year.
