Not sure if this has been covered yet, but I can't find the answer through searching. I know that Amex allows the combining of limits, at least to some degree. My question is if you have two Amex cards with relatively high limits, say $20k and $30k, will requesting them being combined and closing out one of the cards result in a FR (if you've never had one?) I know a lot of people talk about numbers around $35k for Amex usually being around the time they'll introduce FR, but is a work around for that combining limits or would it trigger the FR anyway? I figure if you have $50k in exposure between two accounts, combining them to 1 account results in the same exposure so I'm not sure FR would happen. OR, would FR happen relatively early on with a second Amex account as you're combined limits may require it?
FYI, I only have 1 Amex account now, not 2+, so I'm asking just because I'm curious here.

I'm not sure but I have combined limits twice in the past 60 days and no issues here.
Very doubtful as long as you meet the criteria the donor card being 13 months old they could care less as their exposure is the same.. I have moved alot of my limits around with Amex without issue along with others. I am also at a fairly high 50k expsoure with them currently as well

Did combining your limits result in you going above $35k or so on a single card?

So the donor card needs to be the older of the two and 13+ months old to combine limits?
If one has an Amex card at say a $30k limit, is it common if getting another Amex card to receive FR around $5k-$10k (crossing $35k net exposure) or does that not typically happen?
I'd ultimately like my Amex BCE card to have around a $40-$45k limit as at most I put about $5k on the card during a cycle, so if I were to ever let that report for some reason it would be at < 10% utilization. I'm not sure I can get to $40-$45k on my BCE without FR, but hypothetically I could scoop up another Amex card at some point and likely build it's limit to $10-$15k pretty quickly after a potential 3X CLI at 61+ days. Just sort of thinking out loud here.

Gosh no! When I applied for their cards at first I had a BK on file and got tiny limits. Getting CLIs has been a slow process since you can only have one every six months.
AMEX scares me. It took me years to even try to get an AMEX back after a rough patch (that means I had a charge off from 20 years ago). They forgave me and had me bak without having to repay the charge off. I am still very wary about in how I use this card. I value their willingness to take me back and I value the product.
I would avoid anything that will raise red flags. Not sure if combining your limits will do that. Have often done it with Barclays and many on here do with Chase between products. However, AMEX scares me.
Just a quick reminder that 'FR' is "financial review" - that's what happens when they freeze all your accounts until you provide what they request, which is many times a 4506-T. If you refuse to give them what they ask for, your accounts will be closed. This situation isn't prompted by a CLI request.
If you are only asking for a CLI or account combination and they request the 4506-T, that's not a FR. In this case you can safely ignore it and go on business-as-usual and nothing bad will happen (you just don't get the CLI). In this case many people will just lower the amount of the request, and keep going lower until the 4506-T is no longer requested.
You are correct UncleB, I mis wrote what I meant. I meant to write IV for Income Verification which I just changed in the subject line.
I'd like to hear from more people that have combined Amex limits between two cards that has exceeded around $35k on a single card and hear if it resulted in IV or not.
