We did a Gold to Plat upgrade for 15k SkyMiles for $1k in 3 months last year since a new account was not on the table. It popped up in the month leading up to renewal IIRC. The Delta Welcome Offers can often truly be too tempting, though. The 75k and $50 statement credit popped up for me earlier for Platinum (if you can get 2 cents per SkyMile, that's $1550 value for a $195 AF card). If you do not want to open new accounts, certainly consider upgrading both cards to Platinum since those companion certificates would more than pay for the AF.

My question is, how likely will it be that there'll be an upgrade sub offer made in the future? I have no need for the Platinum as my wife has a gold as well, just curious. Also curious if it would be a sub big enough to make it worth upgrading for, before downgrading back to gold. Would a referral be worth it?
For the garden peeps, would an upgrade reset my spade? I'm looking forward to my rose rold spade coming up soon. Heard it's made of metal.

Every now and again there will be a $50 or $100 statement credit offered by Amex along with SkyMiles for Gold and Platinum SkyMiles cards. Any purchase with Delta during the allowed time will trigger it, so the $10 gin & tonic with the 20% statement credit would also trigger the $50 or $100 credit. Just a little added incentive to get you to give Delta some money early on in your cardmembership. 
Keep in mind that when completing the checkout process on Delta's website, much larger statement credits are offered at times (like $300) for applying for the card, but that's often instead of bonus SkyMiles or at least with a very reduced number of SkyMiles.
The 60-80k offers that come up from time to time for Delta cards are really hard to top in terms of sheer potential value of the Welcome Offer.
I saw the subject and was going to recruit the garden club to help me stage an intervention!

Yeah, I dismisses the companion certificates because I've been buying reward trips, but now that you guys reminded me, I'll be able to use the skymiles for possible upgrades.
For most Amex cards, I've seen upgrade bonus offers when the card turns about a year old. They're not very good on the Delta Gold cards, though... usually something like 15K bonus miles, which is chump change compared to the new card bonus.
