Due date payments

I haven't found anywhere that this has been addressed, but recently I've had a few instances where I've slacked payments off until their due date, only to find out that it is not possible to post them the same day, or that there is a fee to do so.

In both of these cases, I found a quaint solution that I'm afraid doesn't get much attention in this day and age. My grandparents on the other hand probably know of no other system....

First, I missed my Washington Mutual payment cutoff by two hours since I'm in Washington and strangely enough their processing is not. At 4:15 pm, I simply went to the branch and made a cash payment and asked for confirmation that it would post on time. Of course my online record showed overdue with fees for a few days, but it was all quickly reversed and cleared without my involvement.

Second is the same story at Kohl's so I'll skip the details. I just paid cash at one of their registers and everything was peachy, same evening.

Sometimes money is tight down to the last minute, and if paying cash at the window can save anyone $15 a pop and steer them away from 30.25% APR, then hopefully this helps at least once in a while.

Re: Due date payments

As long as the payment is made by the required time on the due date.  I would call and let them know that you just made the payment at the teller/customer service counter.

I pay my Sams card at a Walmart since its right down the street where I live and they credit it on the day it was made usually the next morning.

Re: Due date payments

Hi, cypher, good tactic when you have a branch in your town!

I started a thread collecting info like this. If you haven't seen it already, it's stickied at the top of this board, titled "Starting a thread on different banks' online payment deadlines and quirks." Please feel free to add what you have discovered.

+1.  I pay my bills on my paydays, not when they're due.  This way there's no trying to keep track of individual due dates.  Not to say I'm immune, because everyone can make a mistake from time to time.

I normally pay my cc bills on my pay day.  Since I get paid semi monthly, I've arranged my due dates to fall shortly after one of my 2 paydays.  It's just easier to keep track that way.

Re: Due date payments

As soon as  I get a new statement/bill I go online and schedule my payment - usually on the day after I get paid (I get paid on Thurs).  I get paid every 2 weeks and my due dates are such that half of the payments come out of the first check and the other half from the second check.

Re: Due date payments

Well sure, we're all here on this forum because we're trying to do things better. Paying bills on payday is ideal but not always practical.

For example, at one point I had three accounts that totalled $15,000. That's not huge, but I still did everything I could to make sure those got paid first so as to not fall into default ARP. The account with a $200 balance; that got paid last after I was POSITIVE the others were covered. Sometimes that would require me to take it down to the wire. Sure, pay your bills long before they're due and you won't have any problems.

Just remember, not everyone here is over the bump and shooting for the next goal of 800. Some people here are going for 500 and trying to formulate a strategy that they can work with, and those are the people that I think I was directing my post at. There's nothing wrong with paying your bills on time, even if you have to pay them in cash, in person. That's all I was saying....

Re: Due date payments

Hi Cypher and welcome to the forums

I agree, you have to do whatever you can to make sure you dont pay late fees, or have your current apr changed to a default apr. What you are doing for your situation is great. There is no one way or correct way to do it.

I commend you on paying your bills and doing what is necessary. People here are just stating things they do to avoid these changes and additional charges like you do.

One thing people can do is to also call up their card companies to ask them to change the due date. This may help you in paying your cards in a better manner than what you are now.

We all cherish each and everyone's post and would never allude to anything else.

Thanks for your advice, i am sure this will help others
