Elan Max Cash Preferred MCC Thread

Hello my fellow MF members,

I thought I would start a thread for us members who have this card and want to know what services and/or companies code correctly to receive the 5% cash back. I am already seeing certain ones listed in their pdf that do not code as a 5% category. One of my cards I have TV/Streaming/Internet and Home Utilities set as my 5% categories.

5% Cash back:

DirecTV Stream

Windstream

Disney+

1% Cash back:

YouTube TV

YouTube Premium

Qobuz

If I get enough information on what codes as what I will attempt to make a spreadsheet to help everyone out.

Those 1%s are listed as 5%s in their pdf? Did you reach out to them?

I did not. I am not familiar with which entity is in control of how purchases are coded. I may give them a call when I get off today to see what they say.

Re: Elan Max Cash Preferred MCC Thread

While I don't have an Elan MCP, I can add some Cash+ DP's that would be relevant to your thread, as discussed several months back here.

  • AT&T cell phone and AT&T landline code under 4814 and qualify under Cell Phone Providers
  • Sonic Internet also codes under 4814 and gets the 5% under Cell Phone Providers
  • Pacific Gas & Electric correctly codes for 5% under Utilities

The Cash+ has been a nice set it and forget it for 4 of my monthly bills being covered by 2 of the 5% categories. Been thinking about adding an MCP or another Cash+ in the future.

I thought the Cash+ made you re-select the categories every quarter...is that not the case?

Yes @difringe , but with the reminder email or my scheduled quarterly login leading directly to the option to "Reactivate previous categories", it's only a hair shy of being set it and forget it:

I can confirm that Simplisafe does not code as internet or utilities. To be fair, their pdf says home security systems don't count as utilities, but still figured I'd give it a shot.

Re: Elan Max Cash Preferred MCC Thread

Peloton monthly membership fee does NOT count as "Recreation", despite it showing up as "5940 - Bicycle Shops – Sales and Service"  etc on the bill (which would be an MCC that would give you the 5%), the actual MCC it gets charged to "7997 - Membership Clubs (Sports, Recreation, Athletic), Country Clubs, and Private Golf Courses", which does NOT count. Lots of deep diving to get this clear with them on the phone as to why I wasn't getting my 5%.

This is frustrating since the card specifically lists Equinox/Soulcycle as counting (on their example PDF), which is their direct competition.

T-Mobile DOES count for Cell Phones, DESPITE showing up as "CALLS THROUGH USE OF MAGNETIC STRIPE - READING TELEPHONES" on the bill.

Disney tickets at the gate code for 5% back. Many food kiosks also get 5% back.

Disney tickets purchased online did not code correctly and only got 1%.

I assume that was for the Entertainment category for both?
