But I'm beginning to feel pleased with this ordeal. I think I could find a much better lender!
I just joined BECU.
BECU seems like a great CU but their "financial crimes" unit will make Capital One look like a dream if they suspect anything fishy so make sure that you don't add people you aren't related to as AUs unless you want to have to take a trip to WA with all of the documentation they request to unfreeze your account access.

Lol. While attempting to avoid stepping in dog do, stepping in cow do as a result isn't good. Hopefully that isn't the case for OP.

AUs were never intended to be friends or acquaintances; AUs are more commonly spouses, children, parents, etc.
Exactly. AU accounts were created so that stay at home wives could build their own credit.
What do stay at home bros use to build their credit?
I'm going to buy you a calendar, so you can let 60s go.

Don't EVER FORGET the stay at home kids, and America has a ton of them right now. And those who are building credit are using DISCOVER IT as an instrument.

+1 to that. My college age daughter is on ONE of my credit cards with a fairly low CL so that when I am traveling she has access to this in an emergency where she might not be able to reach me right away and might need something, but she got the lecture on "I will know if you use this; this is how credit cards work; you either use this in an emergency or you ask me first, or I will tell you when it's OK to use it, etc".
I did this because I can see a scenario where her having access to this CL is a useful tool (we bust a water pipe at home or something like that while I'm away, I'm in the hospital sick and she needs groceries), but I also know her SSN since I was the one who asked for it to be issued by the government in the first place.I wouldn't be handing out access to my personal CL to someone who isn't very high on the mutual trust list- it seems to me giving me a SSN to give to a bank as an identifier for them isn't actually unreasonable if I am literally handing you access to a potential debt I am 100% and you are 0% responsible for- and the AU would have to give this information to the bank anyway if this was THEIR CL.
When you add an AU, you dont have to give them the card. Hence the selling of AU slots. It justs boosts their credit, but they don't get a card to spend with. The original account holder keeps it.
@Charmante wrote:I feel very annoyed. Nearly angry. I need advice...
I received a call from Cap1 Fraud Department today. On my 3 year old QS. I have 5 authorized users on the account and have for about 3 months now.
They are requesting copies of SS CARD and DRIVERS LICENSE for ALL 5 users...
Excuse me? This is BEYOND stupid and intrusive... These people have ZERO responsibility or legal connection to this account.
I would NEVER feel comfortable asking 5 individuals to give me such personal documents -- NOR would I expect them to give me such if I did ask them!
So I said "Clear the users off". And she responded "EVEN THEN, THE ACCOUNT WILL REMAIN RESTRICTED UNTIL WE RECEIVE ALL 5 SETS OF REQUESTED DOCUMENTS."
Oh my gosh. I feel violated honestly... Now I have a permanently FROZEN account. Can't upgrade it OR EVEN CLOSE IT...
What do I do...?
Cap One Associate here that is a valid call most people who do it are those people who get paid for adding someone to the account by building their credit scores. While the account is restrcited you probably wont be able to close it
I'm confounded by why you would be upset. It's a perfectly reasonable request.

---just an FYI---BECU has eased up on their out of state verification process (possibly covid related)
I was one who was sent to financial crimes unit when I first joined - and yes it was a pain.
however- I have helped FOUR family members from RI and MA apply for membership (instantly approved with member number, I had to wait days when I applied) and instantly approved for credit cards, have received the cards in the mail and used them - never locked out of account either.

That's good for you but there are plenty of very recent experiences being shared in the Personal Finance forum that have had them go so far as to demand someone actually go in to a branch in WA so they could look at the documents in person. It's very YMMV. Some people never have any verification problems at all, some get hit with it right away, and some get hit with it after they've actually started using their accounts like I did. Point is that it can happen any time and they're not always willing to accept documents that are scanned, faxed, or mailed.

Agreed, OP better tread lightly with these guys.😆
After how they screwed me around I could never wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone I know.
That fraud department is run by Barney Fife.😂
Out of all my dealings with FIs, I've never had one to go as far as to even pull my property tax records!
Stick with Amex Business for what you're using the cards for or something similar @Charmante .
If not, I have no doubts as the fella in the audience on daffy duck says
