Others may not agree, but I think you should get the pass on this. I'm in the same boat and unfortunatly, these days if your kids need loans to get through college "we" as parents need to co-sign for them. While you "did" request "new" credit, this was not a tradeline and was not for you.
So I would argue that this would not stand in the way. I'm all for the "garden" of course, but let's be real here.....
Hmmm. It's a good thing that we have moderators.
I think I'm on the other side of this one. (sorry odd_dog)
No HP's. If you take a hard inquiry, you are resetting your garden date. (IMHO) There are a LOT of good and valid reasons to do so, I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't have, but I think that the HP does reset your garden date.
...and Ray, I realize that my kid is a Unicorn, but at the ripe old age of seven teen, she got considerable scholarships, federal grants AND loans without my signature. She'll have an out of pocket of around $1,200 per semester, and she has that in the bank.
We just had someone unhappy about resetting their gardenning date because of an air conditioner failure in their home... I get it...and am facing the same. When that happens, if I need to finance it, I'll take the HP and reset my garden date.
Let's see if we can get UncleB or Irish to jump in on this one...
I reread the rules and if applying for a mortgage causes a reset in your GC status, unfortunately cosigning a student loan would also. Sorry odd_dog.

Keep in mind that sometimes there are excellent reasons to step out of the garden... I would certainly put student loans (especially for a child) in that category!
I'm not without empathy, though... I've been "unofficially" gardening since January, but at some point I'll likely consider a share-secured loan to give my scores a boost. If/when I do so, it will reset my garden date as well (even though 'technically' I'm not seeking to borrow money), but again I don't see that as a bad thing. Much like the student loans (or a mortgage, for that matter) in the end it will pay off - and is definitely worth it!

Wasn't it beautifulblackpearl that reset her gardening date to refinance her student loans? No new trade line, technically, but a reset nonetheless.
And when my NFCU Cash Rewards is 3 months old, I will revert to a seedling to take the inevitable HP for a CLI.
The only cases where a HP doesn't reset the gardening date, in my understanding, is for a housing rental/lease, utilities, or a new checking/savings account where no credit is extended.

That was probably me because I was about to hit the 6 month mark, and it was totally worth it from a financial savings point of view.
I hated stepping out of the garden, but I hated indentured servitude to Navient more.
I often say that gardening is not a means to an end. It makes you more cognizant of your needs and wants and forces you to think about how your actions now may affect your future goals. Taking some time to garden to eventually leave will give you better opportunities than if you hadn't gardened at all.

Ah, it was you, iheartwings! Thank you! I'm sorry I didn't research to get my example right. I agree that gardening is a means to an end. I really like having my little spades in my siggy because of what they represent but, like you, I know there will be really good reasons to step out. The student loan refi is definitely worth it! ![]()
Gooooooooooood morning boys and girls.
Another month of gardening completed.
DW and I will both be here for June as well. (Palladium Spade month!) She might be jumping over the fence in July, we shall see.
Hope you're all off to a good start! ![]()

Bella, in regards to your Navy cc, it might not necessarily reset you clock as you know i recently got an sp cli so im still firmly in the garden. Navy fertilizer can be relaxing or explosive, just depends on when you use it
Hey Joe, thanks for reminding me that I might get out of it with a SP! One can only hope. ![]()
