Getting weekly offers from WaMu...look good, what's the catch?

Until last month, I had barely even heard of WaMu.  I applied online for a Cap 1 MC and was approved for a 300 dollar card.    I'm in the process of trying to re-build my credit after a long couple of years.  All negative info is 5 months old and slowly fading.   I have nothing negative going on now.  No balances on two cards including the cap 1 I just got, and only a mortgage.  That's all I've got going on right now.  Scores are probably in the mid to upper 600s right now but no better, based on the fako scores I've been watching.    I just applied for an Ebay MC rewards card and was denied.   I just applied for an Amer Express blue cash card over the phone and they couldn't give me an immediate answer.  So I'm waiting two weeks to see if I was approved or denied.  So that's where I'm at.

In the mean time, WaMu has been sending me weekly offers that look really good.  0% through Aug. of 08 and 9.99% after that with limits ranging from 500 to 7500.    How are they offering a card this much lower than everybody else and why are they offering it to me?    What is the catch?  Has anybody tried this offer lately?  Have they been a good company for you?

If I end up getting a blue cash card, of any limit, I probably won't pursue this.  I honestly don't want more than a couple cards again.  But if they deny me, I may eventually try to get a WaMu.   Are they tough or lenient to get a card?   Is the 9.99 for real?

Re: Getting weekly offers from WaMu...look good, what's the catch?

I should clarify that the long couple of years amounted to me, pulling the plug on six cards in Nov. 05 and not paying a dime on them until they were settled this last summer in 07.   It got the job done.  It was very messy and expensive and bad, bad on the old credit reports.   But now it's past and I will never spend like I did again.   I HAVE to start improving my scores because I will need them in the not so distant future.   I have no negatives on any other accounts I've ever had including car loans, mortgage, school loans, and other retail cards which are all helping prop my scores up.   I know many card companies will give you instant declines if they see such bad lates and settlements.   I'm just trying to get a foot in the door again.   I'm guessing WaMu won't help me in reality.   I'm really doubting Amer Express will approve me for anything.   If they give me a 500 dollar card, I won't try for the WaMu.

Basically I'd like to get all my inquiries out of the way now and stick with those cards so in two years, they all drop off at once.   Cap 1 hit all three of my reports.   Amer Express only hit Experian.  Ebay only hit TU.

I disputed some things on my Equifax and unbelievably, they disputed just about all the negatives and I had a bunch of my negatives deleted off their report!  Somehow.  But nobody's looking at that one yet.  I'm sure my Equifax got a big boost after that.

go with a secured card with boa to help you raise your scores and get good tl's going. After a year, I think you can change it to unsecured if you make all your payments on time.

well i for one--owe a lot to WAMU.  They gave me first card after BK with no AF.  I started at 700 and now at 7250.  11.99 interest and at one point 0% interest for a year.  You also get your TU score free each month and as long as you are good with them they play it back.  Also I never asked for cli--just got them automatically.  There is no catch.

cardkeeper

As long as one of your bad cards were not from Providian you should try it. What are your scores? WaMu is known to be very finicky. Some get approved with not so great scores, some get declined with god scores. It is a crap shoot with them.

I got that same offer from WaMu in late September, 2007. I applied and received a cc with $6,500 cl.

The 0% was valid for balance transfers only...not for purchases. At least it was for me.

My scores were mid 600's at the time.
