So I skimmed through a lot of the replies on this, I apologize if I missed something somewhere but if Chase said they didn't close your credit card and you didn't close your credit card, did you try using it again to see if maybe the place it got declined just had issues? I know it's stupid but maybe?
Also I thought I read something not too long ago about credit cards places like Chase and Amex closing accounts due to the pandemic and taking risk precautions. They have stricter qualification requirements and they were closing some accounts. Though I don't know why they would close your account if you had a balance due. I don't know, probably not the case but have you found out anything else. Don't they have to report to the credit bureau why it was closed?
I've not seen any data points of Chase or Amex closing accounts directly due to risk mitigation related to the pandemic; they are both very active in closing accounts for rewards abuse or other violations of the cardholder agreement, and Chase is known for taking quick action if there is elevated risk detected after an account is opened (i.e. your credit reports show you opened 2 accounts in the previous year, then a month later 4 new accounts appear because you got the Chase card in an app spree).
Credit reports only record whether an account in good standing was closed by lender, closed by borrower, transferred to another lender, or paid (not applicable to revolving credit cards, but common to see on a closed loan).
Update: executive office was also no help all they told me is that Bank decided to end relationship and that was it. They refunded annual fee and let me keep the rewards since I hit the $4000 in one month. Such a bizarre ending as no one could actually tell me why.
Thanks for the update. They likely mailed a letter out explaining why. Since you just noticed this over the weekend, it may be a little while before that would arrive, though.

Yes, let us know what that says! If you hadn't already answered that you don't have banking with Chase, I would have guessed this was caused by something on the banking side. So one remote possibility: have you EVER had checking/saving with something that ended up with Chase and had an issue? Sometimes, an old bad account gets discovered through some routine process and then.....
Hopefully the letter will be clear but not holding my breath for a real explanation from them
That's a bummer! I am curious how does it report to your credit report though, just closed and paid? Cause you had a balance due right? So do they allow you to pay that?

If there's an existing balance, the OP can still pay it via whatever payment method was established. As far as the reporting of the account, it will reflect as Closed by Credit Grantor.
Sorry to hear the account was closed. Let us know what the letter says. Frustrating that no one at Chase seems to know what is going on.
One other possibility would be to take the letter and your CSR card to a branch, to see if a human there may be able to sort things out, or at least get some answers. Call centers are efficient but not always effective.
Hi just wondering if you ever got a letter from chase and if gave reason for your account beeing closed and if you where able to get any where with Chase.
@Anonymous I am also curious... Talk about edge of the seat nail biter... I feel as though I'm reading a Steven King novel... 😱
