Helpful to close 1 useless card at bank before applying for different card at same bank?

I am transferring a large balance ($25k) between 0% offers as I pay it down.   for my next transfer, I'd like to get  a citi simpliciti card for the long grace period.

I already have 3 citi cards, one of which is double cash with a 3500 limit that is all but useless to me at that level.   (The other two are 15k and 18k limits and one used to be simpliciti.   They don't have grace periods as good on balance transfers tho)  The low one is only 3 years old and I got it coming out of school where my credit dipped into the 670 range.  I'm back almost at 800 again but they have rejected all of my regular requests to up the limit over the past year+.

is there a $ or number of cards limit at citi?   I have been really surprised they won't budge on the 3500 limit and feel like I might benefit from killing that card before I apply for the simpliciti for the big transfer.

You have a decent chunk of credit with Citi for sure, but I'm sure there are others with higher limits with them.  If Citi has a limit on number of cards, I'm sure it is much higher than 3.  I don't know your whole situation, I personally I wouldn't close any of them, especially since they recently starting allowing multiple Custom Cash cards via product change, which is a pretty sweet card.  I assume you've already used the other usual suspects for balance transfers recently, like the Wells Fargo Reflect and Bank Americard, and that's why you are looking at Citi again?  Good luck either way 👍!

Great suggestions!  I get the citi simplicity mailer every couple weeks so it's been top of mind but I didn't realize there were other options with 21 months of 0%.

The balance is coming from BOA but WF could work.  Hopefully another 21 mo will do the trick

Thanks!

It may not be the max number of cards but the max dollar exposure Citi is willing to extend at this point in time across all of their cards.  If you want the best odds of a new Citi approval, my opinion is to close.
