I know that there has been a lot of posts about the Target Redcard upgrade to Mastercard. I just wanted to ask one more question.
I have had the Redcard since 2010. The card was, until this year, very sparsely used, Like maybe $40 every 3-4 months, mainly when my wife needs hair products like coloring, etc.
Now, since July of last year, I have been buying stuff online and in store every month, in hopes of getting the upgrade. Again, not huge amounts, but sometimes maybe $200 for a rug shampoo, etc. I have been showing more 'luv, in credit card parlance.
I was thinking that if I do not get the upgrade the next time they do upgrades (Jauary and February?), I would just stop using the card and SD it, except for wife's stuff.
I guess that I am a little p***ed. Also, I have not received a credit line increase since 2014 ($2000 limit went to $2800).
I know that emotions and credit cards should not be mixed, but I want to know if anyone else would be p***ed in this scenario and would SD the card as a result. I know that normal people (i.e., don't care about credit cards) would not have these feelings about a credit card, but I (like many of you on this board) are not 'normal', as respects credit cards, or you would not be on this board. Target is a nice fun place, but it's not like we (i.e., wife and me) need to go there.
Have a nice, safe, blissful day !!
Man this card is becoming synonymous with you, lol, k8nda like me and PF. Just think of all those poor souls stuck at $300 for YEARS and relate that to your $2000- 2800k limit. All these big increases or upgrades are only recent, this card was a graveyard for increase for most for many years
.
The Target Redcard store card/MC is an odd duck. I I have the MC version. I had mine for years where it sat at $500 and never moved. I used it weekly and paid in full as soon as the statement generated. When my bankruptcy and new accounts started age, I started to be smal CLI's. I notice when my Fico score hit 720, I got the huge CLI from $4200 to $6000. Then the letter came saying it was upgrading to the MC.
I don't know your financial circumstances, I would check your CR and work on raising your score. Maybe TD Bank will notice it improving and upgrade the card. I wouldn't let your emotions get the best of you.

You've barely used the card, still got an 800$ increase and now you're mad in the middle of a pandemic when lenders generally seem to be tightening up that you're not getting an increase when by your own admission you rarely use even 10% of the credit available?
I am actually not meaning to be rude or sarcastic, but rather rephrasing your post from a different perspective to help you see how unreasonable your reaction is.

Well if you are in Target, #1 you are supposed to go
blind to prices and just suck on your Starbucks drink
of choice. Seriously though this is not a "grower"
card in MyFico speak. What it is is 5% off everything you buy
there card. MC version or regular version is no real difference.
T D Bank is pretty conservative.
Enjoy your Target Card :-)
Cheers
I have a Target right next to me but I'm not shopping there because they don't offer the MC version upfront. My reasons won't make sense to most of you, but it's just the way I am. I guess OP is the same.
Folks, some of you are missing the point here, and not even helping to answer the OP's questions/dilemma regarding their Target account.
Also, just a reminder to folks that obtaining an upgrade from a store card to a coveted major card is a big deal to some people, (especially if they are new to credit or rebuilders), so don't knock it and rain on their parade!
@Anonymous
Im in the same boat as you regarding my card. Hoping for the upgrade, because as we all know, having a Visa/MC version of a store card is a big win in some people's books, and being able to use that card ANYWHERE vs just at that store regardless of it's rewards, is still a win for us.
I've tried everything myself...use for a few dollars every month/PIF before statement, use for several hundred monthly/let balance report, use every other month, and all sorts of equations in between. Nothing has happened. I haven't had a CLI on my card in a year and a half.
So, now...my card is in the SD for a minimum of 6 months maybe longer to see if that triggers anything. I had read in a previous post awhile back someone doing this, and they got the CLI plus upgrade. Now, no guarantee this will happen to me, you, or anyone else, but I will try it.
Target is backed by TD Bank, who can be very conservative. Also, now with everything going on in our world, they could also be cracking down on CLI's, and upgrades. I had a target card many years ago, and waited 10 years before I got the upgrade to Visa (at the time), so I guess I can wait again.
Good Luck!
I understand getting the upgrade may be important to someone even if the card has little benefit to use outside of Target. I just think the problem is we can't really give much in the way of advice because it's an algorithim and you either get targeted for it or you don't. People have gotten upgrades with no spend, light spend, heavy spend, etc...there hasn't been any clear "formula".
IIRC, the OP has several high limit major cards so I don't think they're waiting on the upgrade because they want a solid card to use. But maybe it's just a psychological thing. Just not much we can do to help.

Good job steering the ship straight @pizza1

I would love a Target card but cant get approved for one. Ive had the target debit card for over 8 years now. I shop in Target religiously. My favorite store by par. I get the 5% with my debit card so all in all , it could be worse.
Maybe in a few years when Im out of the 630 range, I'll be able to qualify.
Dear kdm31091:
You are correct. It is a psychological thing.
I do not need a Target Mastercard. I already have other high limit cards, such as Citi DC with a $24000 limit.
It's just that I prefer not to have store cards, and prefer only bank cards, even if co-branded. If I can get the upgrade, why shouldn't I have it?
Target Redcard is the last store card I have.
As to whether I would use it outside of Target, probably never. I would have to be in a place where my Citi DC would not work, and they didn't accpte AMEX BCP, and then I would use Target Mastercard. Possible, but highly unlikely.
Have a nice day, and stay healthy !!!
