Re: How long have you gone without using cash

I have gone several weeks at a time without using cash. The only time I use cash now is (church offering) and to a couple of small businesses that do not accept credit cards. Otherwise I always use the plastic. I write maybe 12 checks a year now. Those are ususally to family or friends for b-day and other gifts.

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

Sadly the coffee fund at work only takes cash.😓 Other than that, long enough that I don't remember...wait what was the question.
Seriously probably a couple of months.

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

I almost never use cash. If I get any (that's usually my mom paying me for taking care of her pets), I usually just deposit it. I haven't actually used cash to pay for anything in months...I don't actually remember when the last time was. Maybe the last time I went to my former hair salon (I think that was in March) because she gave a huge cash discount (way better than any CC rewards).

I don't know why but I hate touching actual money. I'd rather just touch my cards, lol.

I don't carry cash cash. I never use my debit card. It's been a few months since I've used cash. Never thought to track it

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

I am 4 years plus of not using cash. I write about 4 checks a year; primarily for property taxes etc.

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

The only situations where I use cash usually is if I have to split a check with friends or pay a friend for something, and there are a few small restaurants around that take only cash.  All the parking meters and garages around here take cards but I do keep an ash tray full of change just in case.

Unfortunately, no cash, no powerball. So, not too long back.

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

I only use cash for a few things, specifically to tip when I get a haircut, to play the lottery, and at the dry cleaners.  The cleaners I use ask for a $10 minimum for credit cards, and my bill is usually just over $8, so I pay in cash (I don't mind; it's a low-margin business and they do a really good job).

As for haircuts, I generally use a store gift card since it gets me a $4 discount, and tip in cash.

Everything else goes on a rewards card.  Smiley Wink

Oddly (some might say), I also keep a 'stash' of cash at home as well; all small bills for emergencies.  I'll probably never have to dip into it, but it doesn't hurt anything, and it also keeps me from having to run to the ATM if I need $5 or $10.

Re: How long have you gone without using cash

I don't use cash often, but I am not quite as extreme as some of you.

Some places I use cash:

1. I use cash to tip housekeeping when I go to hotels.

2. I use cash occasionally to payback friends and co-workers when we charge expenses on someone elses card and said friend or co-worker does not accept electronic payment (e.g. Paypal transfer).

3. I use cash for some tips, like the AAA guy who came out to give me a jump start a couple years back (usually charge restaurant tips to my CC, but some tips are cash based).

4. On rare occasions, I use cash in small restaurants and food trucks that don't accept cards.

5. When traveling internationally, I sometimes use cash when cards are not accepted or hard to use (not universally accepted elsewhere like in the US).

6. I use cash in toll booths and the like, especially outside of my local area where I have electronic toll payment (fastrak)

The above are just a few examples. To be fair, I withdrew around 200 bucks in October 2014 and used it all only around April 2015 when I withdrew another 200 bucks. I am about to run out and will probably need to withdraw more money in 2 months or so. I have  not traveled internationally since October, so my cash spend has been on the low end. With that said, my "cash" expenses are relatively small. I put about 60k on my CCs each year and a fair bit through other forms of electronic payments. In comparison, my occasional checks (maybe 1-2 times a year if that) and ~1k cash spend a year (if that) is insignificant.

Stopped writing checks.  Use RadPad with paypal Debit cash back card for 1.5% back on rent.  Much better than savings account. Smiley Wink
