How often should I pull out a sock drawer card and use it to prevent them from closing my account due to inactivity?
It depends on the issuer. Some can go > 12 months without inactivity while others will CLD or close if the account is inactive < 6 mos. Check with the issuer in question.

+1. From reading different threads about this, Barclays seems to be on the < 6 month category.
To be safe I use a card every 3 months except for my CareCredit I only use it when I need it. They never closed after 1 1/2years the last time.
I went about 3 years without using my Discover card and nothing happened. Wouldn't recommend it though. I just rarely used it because it had a $500 CL, while my other card had a $2500 CL at the time. So I felt like using that card and giving them my business over Discover. But then just recently I got the Discover card bumped to a $5,000 CL, then a month or 2 went by and I upgraded the Discover card to a Discover-IT and I just put in a request to add an additional $5,000 of CL to it.
So ya, it varies. I went about 3 years without using mine. And I have seldomly used it since breaking that 3 year mark. My go to card right now is my Freedom. But it is smart to use your other cards once or twice a month at the least.
