How to get a PC or CLI from Capital One

Capital One Exec Office - Step by Step

Best practice steps for Capital One satisfaction:

1.  Is your request reasonable?  Don't bother if your card is only in the first 6 months, if you have a very low score, or still have very low limits on all other cards.  This works best for long time customers stuck at the limit they got when their credit was much worse.

2.  Try customer service first.  Call the 800 number, or website chat and ask if you have any "offers".  Those looking for PC to rewards or no AF have reported great success with this.  You can also ask for a soft pull for CLI, but most people seem to get denied at this level.  You can also try the social team before the exec team if you want - that might work too.  You can reach them by posting on their facebook wall and they will email you back.

3.  If the above doesn't work, write a polite letter to the CEO via snail mail or email (google fu or pm someone here that has the address) explaining that you have tried to PC or CLI and were unable.  Explain why you want this, and ask if they can help you get in touch with a credit analyst or other party that can help you.  Be nice, clear, and firm.

5.  Answer the phone when your Exec rep calls.  Be prepared for a polite but all business conversation about your income, expenses, investment accounts, and credit history.  They will soft pull your file and may ask you to explain past derogs.  Also be prepared to explain why you want a higher limit.  I mentioned reimbursable business expenses, but you need your own reason when you call.

6.  Typically you will get an instant answer on rewards and annual fee requests, and a call back after 3 to 5 business days regarding credit limit increase requests.  They will normally post the new credit limit on your web portal at 9 am, and the rep call will come later in the day.  If you don't get a CLI, ask the exec rep why you were not eligible.  You might learn some great tips specific to your file, and identify what you should be focusing on to improve your chances.  Chase backdoor did this for me after a denial, and it was extremely helpful.

7.  Don't call the exec line unsolicited.  These reps each have a list of customers who need a response after executive contact.  They handle each case personally and follow up on their list.  If you call without an open executive case, they may not be as enthusiastic about helping you.  If you call and are rude, or threatening to cancel, be prepared for rejection.  If you email or write you will be an open case, and the reps will work hard to satisfy your requests.  Don't be shy, ask for what you want.

8.  Don't share the name or phone number of your exec rep.  That will flood the call center and make it much harder for you and everyone else to get help.  If someone asks you for that information, point them to the steps above first.

Lots of us have  had amazing results contacting the Cap1 exec office.  Here are the steps again for anyone who needs it.  If you want the email, just click the google fu link.  It still works.

Good luck!

Re: Capital One Exec Office - Step by Step

I followed the advise from this thread and decided to go ahead and email the exec office. I put my email together and was going to sit on it for a month until my Uti was lower (dealing with an airline dispute for 4k). :-/ but I accidentally hit send instead. Oh we'll.... So I thought whatS the worst that can happen...I don't get a cli, everything stays the same and I can do this again in a few months.

WelI, I got the call the next day and they asked me the general financial questions and said I'd get a call in 3-5days. Today is the third day and I had a message from the exec I was assigned saying my cli was approved and if I had any questions to call her direct. :-D went from 1.5k to 5k And it is still a week shy of 1 year old.  In a few months Ill let you know the outcome of lowering my apr.

Re: Capital One Exec Office - Step by Step

I have had both my Capital One Cards for almost 2 years each.  Both of them have been stuck at a $500 limit this entire time.

I decided to pull the trigger and send an email as suggested by this thread.  I sent the email last Friday and got a phone call on Monday.  I answered all the basic questions the lady asked and she said she would get back to me within a week.

Today I logged into my Capital One accounts and both of them went from a 500 dollar limit to a 1000 dollar limit.  I was very happy and couldn't of done it without this forum and this thread.

Best of luck to those who give it a shot.

Thanks p-!!!

I was just waiting to cli my BSE after the 20th and found the thread for Cap1. I hadn't even considered doing anything with this card but pull it out on occasion just to keep it active Not thinking it would ever see past the ONE credit STEP.

This has been an extremely rewarding experience and am sure it has helped a lot of Cap1 card holders that had given up on thinking they will feel the love if they just kept waiting....and waiting for Cap1 to appreciate their business. If this is a test run for Cap1 to establish a more mainstream approach for those of us that have been limited by the beginner card, as one poster had mentioned somewhere in the Cap1 Exec treads, they will definitely see a lot more customers keeping the cards in their wallets instead of a draw.

Thanks again everyone who have contributed here. Without you I wouldn't be here either.

Re: Capital One Exec Office - Step by Step

this really helped .. thanks alot

I have been a capital one card holder for more than three years and had a static CL of 500. tried every other channel, was even denied from executive office phone line. Took this advice and sent them an email, an account specialist was assigned and she got me a CLI to $2000, which is a little lower than I expected (since I have a BankAmeri Visa at 7500 CL and agent told me she'd try to match this limit) but even thats 4X my basic limit of 500.. so it worked like a charm.

Also, discussed the type of card that I had and requested a change to cash back rewards card without any annual fee, which is there on my existing card. Cash back option ahs been aaproved and annual fee waiver is being considered.... WOW! Thanks to this forum and this post, or else I didnt have a clue of what to do.

Re: Capital One Exec Office - Step by Step

Man oh man, it's been a successful 6 months after gardening up credit, and I'm back after going in the cave and getting my credit scores/reports back up to Great/Excellent!!!! I currently just received a $2,000 CLI from Chase on my Freedom card, (probably could of got more but I went the safe route) and since I recently got my equifax scores over 700+ I went for the impossible Cap1 mission (A CLI from $500).!!! So I was going to do this 6 months ago but I figured I'd wait until I hit the 700 mark on equifax (was 685 at the time) and when I had a longer credit history. So I log back into my fico and head directly to this post, and I follow it from scratch! I call the customer service office and change my income from 27,000 to 43,000 and ask for that good OLE CLI. And you know what happen from there, I got #DENIED lol but hey it's all apart of the process. So I ask to speak to someone hire up, and what do you know, a senior analyst hops on. I tell him that I called in to do a credit limit increase and that I was denied, and told him I've been trying for the past year and no luck, I tell him that I always get the same letter, and is there anything he could do. He said no, once its processed we send you a letter explaining why, and after that you can re-apply in the future. (It's when I knew he was a robot) I said okay well can you like do a manual review, or have it sent to be manually reviewed, like chase or any other bank does when it doesn't get approved at first. He said no trust me if I could do something I would, and that's when I said okay well thank you and have a good day! (He was beating around the bush and I hate robot talk, to me it's just bad customer service) Hence I hung up. I was happy about receiving in my eyes of what I call bad customer service, because while I was on the phone I was typing up my email to Mr.Fairbanks. Now I am successfully in part 2 of the CLI phase, and I am waiting to hear back from Cap1/Exec office, and I will keep everyone informed on what happens when I get a email or call back! I am asking for a CLI from $500 to $5000 (hoping they can match my chase limit) but I will be happy with $3,000! My question to you guys is should I PC to the Green card and try to get a higher limit, or should I stay on journey and try the 5k CLI. (Also if I go the green card way and delete my cap1 card from life, will the history stay on the green card when I PC or disappear? BTW what is a PC? one card to another right? (Blonde Moment)

Congrats on your success.  I hope it goes well for you with the Cap1 Execs.  The Chase recon analysts listed on the backdoor sticky are pretty good too.

PC is a Product Change.  When I asked for it they made my Platinum Rebuilder into a Green Cash that pays 1% plus an annual 50% bonus.  I don't know all of the features of the Journey card, you'll have to see if that one is a better fit for you on rewards and stuff.

If you do PC, the history stays with the card.
