Those are all interesting uses i have about 70k sitting in my csp UR account. I was thinking of using mine for trip to US virgin islands with avios 20k round trip economy isn't too shabby.

I'll have to check that out.  I have about 100k UR points myself but need 120k just to get two round trip tickets to London, not including what I would need for hotel stays.

I have found domestic flights via avios are pretty reasonable. I think AA has direct flight to san juan and saint thomas for 20k avios round trip which is pretty nice, but the problem is no hyatt hotels in US virgin islands, the only one i could transfer to is marriot which is category 7 or 8 , which cost an arm and an leg like over 100k i think thats ouchie.

Yep.  Would just have to pay out of pocket for that.  But I use hotels.com where you basically get 10% off (if you know you eventually earn 10 stays since after 10 stays the next is free) and then if you used the CSP you would get 5.35 UR/$ if you go through the Chase UR mall portal.

i actually looked at how much it would be in cash vs using reward points i think it was 250 per night vs 40k points that seems like not the best of conversions . Its always the hotels that get you !! .

I get what ur saying and its true. In some cases, its not always beneficial to use UR points for the hotel stay. That’s exactly how I also calculate but, it can be the other way round in some cases. If its 250 dollars vs 40k points, definitely go for the 250$, coz u can even cash back 40k for 400$.

CSP is also the only card I'll have with an AF.

A little known tibit if you do some online shopping is the UR mall, which can give you additional UR points per dollar from various retailers. The best thing is that you don't have to use a Chase card in order to get the addtional points. I splurged and purchased a purse from Nordstrom that was already marked down on clearance. At that time, Chase UR mall was running a promotion for 8 points per $ on Nordstrom purchases. That one purchase netted me 2400 additional UR points which I value at least 1.25 cpp depending on where I want to transfer them too. The UR mall makes the CSP even more valuable to me!

Are you sure you dont have to use your CSP to make the purchase to get the extra rewards?

I am about to purchase a new laptop at best buy using the 0% financing offer, so if I purchase it with my best buy card through UR mall, will I get the extra 1pt/$1 spent on the best buy card?

Re: Is CSP practical?

As others have mentioned, the signup bonus is very enticing... for example I have relatives in Africa and those 50000 points will cover a roundtrip to JNB.

Beyond the first year, the math doesn't work out in my favor .... unless I add my little brother ( who dines out a lot ) as an AU.

$26500 Amex EDP / $20000 Merrill+ / $12000 Chase Sapphire Preferred / $12000 Chase British Airways / $7500 Barclays Arrival+ / $7500 FIA Amex / $7500 Paypal Extras MC / $7000 Chase Freedom / $3500 Discover It

In general, with all of these malls you do not need to use the issuer's card.   BUT...., if something goes wrong, you tend to be out of luck: even if the CSRs want to help, they can't track the entire purchase they way they can with one of their cards, and probably won't be able to give you the missing bonus.

This is a judgement call, things don't go wrong that often.  If getting 0% financing is more important than getting URs (which you probably get anyway), use the Best Buy.

But first, always check something like http://www.cashbackmonitor.com/ for alternatives.

http://www.cashbackmonitor.com/Cashback-Store/Best-Buy/ shows malls with rates well above Chase.
