I now suspect somebody else did it, should I file a police report?  I can't prove who did it, but I have my suspecions.  I tried calling Cap1 and said I didn't apply for this card, but they said it appears that I did.  What really happens if I file a police report?  Should I wait for the card so i have the card for evidence?  "This card came in the mail that I didn't apply for".

Let's simplify this.  One of two things happened:

  • Someone physically accessed your computer when you stepped away
  • You inadvertantly applied for the card and didn't realize it

Those two scenarios should cover 99.99999999% of the possibilities of what happened.  If nobody physically accessed your computer, then you applied and didn't know it.  There's maybe a .000000001% chance that something else happened but unless you're Lloyd Christmas, you should just move on.  Let the card age and your profile will improve down the road.

Do you have cats? One of their favorite pastime is to walk across your keyboard at the most inopportune times.

Unfortunately, there is rarely if ever an "undo" button with approved credit card aplications. Once the account has been approved, it is going to report to the bureaus whether you cancel it immediately or not. So your AAOA will be dinged regardless, and the HP(s) of course remain.

I don't like keeping useless accounts around, but I understand the viewpoint of "the damage is already done" because it's very true. The damage is done regardless of what you do at this point.
