MCC Code for Games

Anyone know what the merchant category codes for Xbox, Playstation, and Steam are?

Edit: Just to add on for any more replys.  Anything related to games would help for Category 2.  It's a promotion so I only need a single transaction within each category between now and next 12 days.

Curren Plan:

1: N/A

2: Games?

3: Exxon, Shell, Bp, Sams Club gas, Costco gas, etc.

4: N/A

5: Fast-food or restaurant

6: Target or Walmart

7: Dick's Sporting goods

8: Saint Judes

9: Parking Meter?  Have to find one

10: CVS or Walgreens

11: Harris Teeter, Publix, Food Lion, etc.

12: N/A

Re: MCC Code for Games

Discover lists Steam under "Travel/Entertainment" and codes as "Video Game Arcade/Establishment" according to my last statement.

Re: MCC Code for Games

I only purchase digital for the PlayStation 4 now. I don't know what MCC was used, but Uber Visa did give me 2% back as an "online" purchase.

Seeing this thread makes me wish that the Uber Visa subscription credit would be expanded to include Plus and Gold membership.

steam

Visa/MC - VIDEO GAME ARCADES/ESTABLISHMENTS, sometimes also code as Merchandise - DIGITAL GOODS- GAMES. Citi doesn't qualify these as entertainment for extra rewards.

Amex - Merchandise & Supplies - Internet Purchase

Re: MCC Code for Games

Someone posted this card a few months ago and I wish you could get it in NA, it is 5% off most video game purchases:

I think the best you can do is 3% on video games with Marvel card which was never enough to make it worth it for me.  Or there is the Playstation card, but I buy from Steam alot so that doesn't help much.

Re: MCC Code for Games

Just saw the update, OP.

  • Cat 2 can be done by Steam, yes. They code either as 5816 or 7994 but both cases they will be eligible. They sometimes take a few days to post so better do it early.
  • Cat 3 must pay at the pump. Cannot pay within store (in which case will code as 5541 - service stations). Costco gas may not code as this category but may code as Cat 6.
  • Cat 9 includes public transport so you can pay bus/metro fares. Or park at a paid parking lot...
  • For Cat 6 if you spend at Target, be sure to double check the result as I have had mixed results (Citi had coded as grocery store before, Chase coded as one of the MCC's in Cat 6, forgot which one)

If you have the prime visa, you can get steam/playstation cards on Amazon with 5% back. You can also do it at grocery stores if you have a card with good rewards there (e.g. BCP). I wouldn't do it all the time, but $50 a few times a year never seems to raise any eyebrows for me.

RIght, but it looks like OP needs it for a one off, and has to make a purchase in that MCC, so gift cards are out.

Re: MCC Code for Games

Just for clarification, it's a bonus on a MoneyLion account.  I don't know if anybody here has ever posted about it.  I think gift cards should be okay since this is for a debit card.  I just get a free $25 gift card if I complete everything.

I just meant buying a game gift card at a grocery store wouldn't give you the gaming MCC you need (you would get a grocery one instead).

And.... $25?   Are you sure that you won't be doing unnecessary extra spend just to get this.  The list includes a particular charitable donation for example.   Would you be giving to that outside of the promotion?
