Need input on new card. prefer a rewards card with high balance. what should I go for?

I am looking to get some imput on which card I should applu for that I in range for that is known for giving the highest limits. (isn't everyone?)

My score is currently over 700 and I have a high CL of 6500 with Navy federal and a few 2500's spread out and a secured USAA with $2500. I'd like to replace the USAA card and get my $2500 out now that I no longer need a secured card and my preference would be like the navy federal I use for the rewards. All balances are paid down monthly when used.

IMO, the best general purpose rewards card is the Citi Double Cash.  However, depending on what "high balance" means to you, Citi may not be your guy.

Other general rewards cards that people like are the Discover It and Chase Freedom for their rotating 5% categories.

If you really want a high balance, then try a new card with NFCU or USAA.  You already have a relationship with them, which I find counts for more than good credit history.  You might try PCing your secured card to a better rewards cards, like the Cashback Rewards Plus Amex or Preferred Cash Rewards WMC.

Best bet for a high starting credit limit is going to be a Capital One card. You didn't mention what kind of rewards you're interested in, so I'll recommend the Venture/VentureOne and the Quicksilver. The Ventures are known for their ridiculously generous starting limits (seriously, I think it's going to come back to haunt them), up to $50,000 in some cases. Venture has an AF of $59 after the first year, but you earn 2 miles per dollar. VentureOne has no AF, but you only earn 1.25 miles per dollar.

I recommend the Quicksilver (1.5% cashback) over the Citi Doublecash (2% cashback), because Citi can be stingy with starting limits. With the Quicksilver, you frequently see people with $10,000 starting limits.

The best part is if you get approved for one, you're likely to get approved for two, so you can easily add $30,000+ of credit in 5 minutes. It will use the same HP's for both applications.

All the cards have signup bonuses, which I'll leave to you to research.

USAA does not convert the secured cards into anything else. I figured if I was going to take a hit on my credit I'd seee what else is out there before using them. If they'd roll it into one that would be different but that was not the case when I called them.

As for high limit I guess I should have been more clear. I was hoping for one over the $6500 of my NFCU up to around $10000 or so. I read that a lot of companies want to see you having a card over 5000 to get a large opening limit so I was hoping for at least or more than the NFCU

Thanks everyone for the input so far

I'll second Cap1 for high starting limits.  They can be very, very generous.

Also, there's no reason you just have to apply for one card.  The world of credit is very large, and there are a lot of different products.  Sometimes, just one doesn't fit your needs.

Suggest you apply for an Airline co-branded card (United/Chase, Frontier/Barclays, Delta/AMEX, etc.) - the intitial limits (for me anyway) have been significantly higher than a typical card. Good luck.

Wasn't always this way. Lessons learned.
