I am fairly new to credit and wanting a third credit card / charge card to have a steady reporting history. Which of the following cards or others would I be approved for ? Currently I have a Wells Fargo Student Credit Card for 7 months a limit of 500 and a Capital One rewards card for 6 months with a credit limit of 300 in the steps program. All with a utilization of 3%. My credit score is around 700 - 710.
1. Amex Zync.
2. Chase Freedom
3. Citi Thank You.
I would go for the Chase Freedom. The rewards program is one of the best out there, especially if you can open a checking accunt with them. Aside from their standard rewards of up to 5% back, if you have a checking account with them, you get 10 points per transactiaon(no minimum) and 10% bonus points every year/quarter.
If you want to get into the AMEX eventually, the earlier the better due to their backdating policy
I wouldn't go for a Chase Freedom yet. They give notoriously low CL's and are also harder to get a CLI from. So you just might get another $500 from them and be stuck at that virtually forever.
I would say Discover More, but it's somewhat the same situation as the Freedom, albeit a little less restrictive.
I don't have any knowledge about Citi products.
I'd take my chances with the AMEX Zync, if anything, because it'll get your foot in with AMEX, backdating and gives you a better shot at a revolver down the line.
When AMEX first rolled out the Zync, I believe it was targeting people such as yourself that were somewhat new to credit. Try their pre-qualify site and see what comes back as potentially something for you. Provided that you do NOT have a SINGLE late or any other negative reporting you MAY have a shot at it. It will likely help your credit mix as it is a charge card as opposed to a revolver......keep us posted
I would go with the Zync; I have a fondness for Amex charge cards, but Amex is a good company to get in with early. The spending ability will grow with you over time. I would definitely wait on the Freedom, you are too likely to get a low starting limit and any credit limit increases in the future will require hard credit inquiries. Wait for that until, I would say, 2 years of history. I don't have any experience with Citi, so I can't comment on that, other than their thank you points are not worth a full penny when redeemed for cash back.
I decided to go with the Freedom card and applied through telephone, however before I started my application the Rep told me the processing takes 2 weeks.........So I jus applied lets see what happens.
I'd say the Freedom has the best rewards out of those cards, I just hope you get a decent credit limit.
