If I were a techie, I'd be able to just buy the part and replace it. Instead, when I got a quote for repair, they said that they have to take my laptop apart since the the DC power thing attaches to the motherboard, and I might as well just get a new computer.
Ah laptop! There is no custom built laptop standard going around. So for laptop you have to rely on OEM like Dell and HP.
For desktop I highly encourge you to take the time to build your own computer. You will appreciate it.

All I've had for years now is a laptop. Haven't had a desktop in over 8 years! I'm on my 2nd laptop and closing in on #3. ![]()
This is the first I have seen the term "hidden tradeline". If I am understanding the discussion right, the account doesn't report to the credit bureaus. What would be the benefit in not having it reported? Wouldn't you still have to report the debt when applying for a loan such as a mortgage? So how would they verify it if it wasn't being reported?
The benefit of a hidden tradeline is that if you have a balance, it doesn't affect your util. If you get a CC w/$2k limit and get a computer for $1k, you're at 50% util, which lowers your FICO score.
For the highest FICO, it's best to have only one CC reporting with a balance at <9%. I've seen my score drop by over 20 points just having a second CC reporting a balance.
It also helps because every new acct lowers your AAoA, so your AAoA isn't adversely affected.
On the other hand, if you don't carry a balance, it would actually help your util to have the CL report.
And yes, if you're applying for a mortgage, you should list every debt, whether or not it reports on your CR. But for most of us, we're looking at the day to day affects on our FICO. ![]()

Asus has a kit but it'll turn out to be a portable gaming monster.
Desktop builds are easy--foolproof these days. It's pretty difficult to not get it right. You will get a quality product crapware free. On the low end, it will cost more but run so much better. High end builds will save money and run equivalent or better to boutique builders minus the custom cases and paints.
For some of us, it is easy, but for someone who has never done it, it could be very intimidating.
The building part is the fun and easy part, it's the part where you actually turn on the computer and hope to god the computer boots correctly the first time that can be the daunting part.
Wow just got $3200 but don't need anything. ![]()
