Yes, that is really a big part of it.    A long history, with no baddies on the record, will give a high score.  And if in addition you don't have INQs, and have a mix of credit, you can get near or to 850.

Getting a high score that way isn't hard, recovering from baddies is much more work.

It depends on what you consider old????  

I will add that time is a great ally in the scoring world.

But you still have to show the same responsible behavior month after month to maintain whatever you've achieved.

It depends on what you consider old????  

I will add that time is a great ally in the scoring world.

But you still have to show the same responsible behavior month after month to maintain whatever you've achieved.

Some information is missing:

How old is your credit file? what do they tell you is your oldest reporting account?

What is your utilization overall, and highest utilization on any one card? How many cards have any balance?

I will suggest that if you want to get to 850, you probably have to nearly give up borrowing. 850 suggests near zero risk of default, and you only get there if you have almost nothing to default on, IMO.
