Where I work, it is our restaurant's policy to ask on credit cards when the bill is larger then 30.00. Personally, I take the credit card and match it to the last name of the cardholder, if the last name does not match, I let my boss know and he or she will recommend what to do next. I'd rather not take any chances and be accused for running a stolen credit card. On debit cards we don't typically ask because there is no need to, but credit cards we do it to save us from getting in trouble with the card processors and the agreements we have with them. In other places I know it is highly discouraged to ask for ID, but we do it to make sure everything goes smoothly for us and the guests.
@espnjunkie Well the Sams Club Discover works like you major credit card as well as your membership or ticket to shop in sams club. I would guess you have no choice? But doesnt really bother us since my mother is the only one using it and no one else
I feel exactly the opposite... exactly how are they protecting me?
by allowing the cashier to have my home address is not protecting me from anything
if the card is stolen then i am not liable for any of the charges, the only thing showing my ID does is open me up to idenity theft

I agree. I don't like having to show my ID that has my full name, home address, picture and signature on it. It leaves a person easily open to fraud as all of the necessary informtaion to steal my identity is right there.
Also I have noticed some bars ask for an ID in addition to your card to start a tab, can you refuse that? Are bars legally allowed to do that?

In what way? There is an element of misplaced paranoia here.
Drivers licenses have forever included a picture. True, a DL can't be used for commerce but in the same space it contains many times more personal information about you than a photo CC.

If lost or stolen I would not want anyone to find out anymore about me than the name on the card. I would cancel it immediately, but you can never be too careful about identity theft
Visa actually instructs merchants not to accept a card if it is unsigned or says "SEE ID". http://usa.visa.com/merchants/risk_management/card_present.html#anchor_6
They are supposed to ask you to sign it and match it to a government issued form of identification. Cards are not valid unless signed, so if a merchant accepts it they are violating their agreement.
I think it is silly anyway since most places do not even look at the signature. The only place that still takes the card round here is Radio Shack, and they do actually match the signatures. My brother tried to make a purchase there and they would not process it until he signed the card. When other stores used to take the card they never turned it over to check the signature.

Fair, but a lost or stolen DL is of more value than a photo CC because the CC can be cancelled. Your address and DL # is likely not changing anytime soon, and certainly not because of a lost CC or DL. Also consider a stolen wallet likely contains both CC's and a DL so again, the photo on the CC is of lesser concern to me.
FWIW, I do see your point.
Can a bar legally ask you to give them your ID and ccard in order to start a tab? This is something I am unsure of
